Well, the assumption is that they could take carts aboard. And yes, I know you suggested barges already, and yes, they're a good idea. But cable ferries fill a different role. You can't call a barge over from the other other shore, so they'd be useless for a semi-permanent river crossing.

Small Bridge?

Postby thacher » Sun Nov 29, 2009 7:38 am

Mabey a small bridge that can only fit so far, but its arched so boats can go under, it would be neat, and very very very very useful.

Suggested before. There was actually a quite active thread on the subject, but I stopped reading it considering it de-railed into a flame war.

Bridges

Postby Phalene » Fri Jan 22, 2010 8:17 pm

It would be very nice if, with a great deal of effort, characters could build a bridge to cross the rivers and maybe the ravines/cliffs. I suspect they'd be very useful for cart travel, and I especially like the idea of a simple wooden foot bridge and a bigger stone cross bridge.

Adding goats for the bridges is of course entirel optional. :P

Everyone, including devs, wants bridges, but the engine as it is can't handle them. They've been put on the backburner until more pressing issues are resolved.

Stairs and bridges

Postby JustasJ » Thu Feb 11, 2010 3:03 pm

Sometimes in the map you might encounter a long cliff which takes several minutes to pass. Or a river you would like to cross constantly. Why not adding stairs which could be built over the cliffs and bridges to cross rivers with instead of rowing north and south over and over again until your rowboat gets stolen?
Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision.

I really like this idea at least for the bridges. The stairs might be a bit far fetched though. If people were bale to make bridges there would also be a matter of whether or not boats are able to pass under them. And of course they would probably require constant repair. If that was all able to be worked out it think this is a pretty neat idea.

I think a lot of people would oppose the idea of stairs, as they use those ridges as part of their defensive fortifications. However many people are eagerly awaiting bridges... only the head code gnome hasn't yet worked out how to code bridges that boats can go under. It'll be in the works most likely, if he can ever think of a decent solution.
