Most of the time. Because when my study window is full and has six hours before the first thing is finished
I get bored and log off. I've made it pretty clear that a six hour wait time is boring.
It is a cap on how much fun you're allowed to have in a time period.
I assume what stops you from having fun in the 6h study time is the following:

I haven't played in the old worlds nor have I been around at this world for long, but it really doesn't take much time for me to craft all the curios I can study - and others in this thread seem to agree. So it actually
frees more time so I can do what I want to. Sure, it takes away some of the time I could use doing something I wanted to, but on the other hand I don't have to that over and over again, even if I didn't actually needed/wanted to do it that often, but needed the LP - it's being gained in the background instead.
I think it really boils down to what was mentioned on the OP - curios will benefit the casual player, whereas the older system benefits the hardcore player (but incentives botting). But I think - and correct me if I'm wrong - that the main benefit of curios - and that the OP seems to miss - is that it frees up the time of both the casual and the hardcore, avoiding repetitive tasks, whereas the main drawback is taking away the reward of said tasks (which sometimes might really be fun or what you actually needed/wanted to do, but most of the time
it isn't - from what I read here and from what I've experienced in other games with the "learn from doing it over and over again" system).
What I think - as a newcomer - would be ideal is the following: There are some curios that come from doing the same task over and over, like if you boat a lot you'll sometimes find that curio thingy on the water, or if you make a lot of cheese you'll find that cheesy curio that gives a lot of LP. That's a nice balance between the two system, since it rewards you for doing a task a lot, but also gives you the liberty to stop doing that repetitive task and explore something else, even if you needed that LP, since now it's being earned in the background from the curio you earned (doing that task).
