Grappling hooks--Boat combat

Postby Onionfighter » Wed Aug 11, 2010 1:25 am

An item that can be added to rope and thrown at boats. It could function like other marksmanship weapons, perhaps acting faster than a sling since boats move so quickly.

Once a boat is pulled onto shore or into another boat, it is held in place until the thrower takes damage or moves.

The purpose is to make water combat viable. People in adjacent boats should be able to hit each other. People in boats should be able to tie the rope used for grappling to their boat, to free the other hands for combat items.

It is not entirely clear how it should be implemented -- in particular, there should probably be some competitive process involved in pulling the boat; and there are the issue of graphics and the matter of implementing it without having to make very special arrangements in the boat code, &c. -- but yes, it would be cool. I wouldn't mind. :)

Well, I was thinking of a pretty simple interaction. Once the hook successfully lands on the boat, the victim loses control of the boat and is dragged next to the person pulling the hook. The victim would travel in a straight line toward the attacker, and if any obstacle prevents the movement of the victim, the hook is released.

I'm not sure about graphics, maybe a line like from arrow shots.

Strength of the puller versus the constitution (their will to stay away) of the person being pulled possibly?

Maybe a small competitive minigame or something similair could be implemented to simulate the struggle of pulling them in (someone not paying attention in their boat would be easier pulled in then somone actively watching then)
