Re-Forging Metals

Postby vikingdragons » Wed Aug 11, 2010 4:00 am

Forges can create bloom and turn coins into metal bars, so why not turn a metal-product back into metal bars/nuggets. Reforging would create a 1 or more metal bars/nuggets (depending on what/how much was used to create it), with a reduced quality of the metal-product. i admit i don't grasp the quality formula, so i am going to leave that to those wiser than myself.
also, any non-metal used to create the product is lost during reforging.

I do agree that it would be reasonable, at least in principle, but I'm not too keen on implementing it since it would mean having to specify for every single metal object what it should turn into. That's the kind of thing which makes code maintenance scale really badly. Repairs are a problem as it is, to be honest.

Inb4 "just use the recipes that were used for crafting them": Yes, that can be done to some extent, but not generically. Some objects may be possible to acquire through several routes, some may be possible to acquire other than by crafting, et cetera.

(That's not to say that I've excluded the possibility for all time, of course.)

Keep every items complete transformation history, if you can get past the overhead it might allow you to do interesting things around the lineage of artifacts etc

I could care less about re-forging metals, but having things made of different items act different would be a definite bonus. For example, I make rope out of silk perhaps the graphic changes, perhaps it gives some slight bonus to CHA, who knows.

Along those lines it'd also be nice if things of higher quality (steel instead of cast iron for example) worked 'better', like let's say in a cauldron the steel counts for more quality even if of lower quality

an absolute must for a world with a finite supply of resources (i.e. post-alpha stages where the world isn't reset regularly, although there's a case to be made for world resets on a regular basis, like a tale in the desert, etc.)
