Wild Metal

Low quality and rather rare basic metals. It could be found near cliff faces and require a fair amount of perception and exploration skill.

Requiring to find whole mines for every scant piece of metal is excessive. Hermits and and sole players ought to be able to barely scrape by. As it is we cannot scrape by.

While this is a good idea from a purely simulationist point of view, I have to disagree with it from a game design point of view - even as I play a lone wanderer.
Metal, as it stands right now, is only really required for combat - and that's something you wouldn't want to do when alone, anyway. Sure, it's better to do most things with metal tools than it is with primitive ones, but it's not critical. I think metal should stay rare and unavailable to you unless you're ready to spend time finding, mining, working and defending it, or find a group of people to share all these jobs with.

Forgot to note: right now, I'm more in favour of adding simple tools based on bone, glass, antlers and the like as a middle ground between primitive stone-and-wood and advanced metal tools, where appropriate, of course.

yea.. we need better equipment than primitive crap. I want a scythe, I want a better plow, I want better walls than pallisade, and I want to be able to construct basements and containers without metal, I dont care if its lesser quality, so long as it is better than the basic crap.

been suggested literally more times than i can count. the devs have talked about adding bog iron and panning for gold but to be honest, i wouldn't hold your breath. it's also possible that they will be completely changing the way that mines work, again, don't hold your breath waiting for this.

in the meantime, collect some herbs, go to nople or a neighboring village and buy some metal. expect to pay between 10-20 foraged items (blueberries, chantrelles, mussels, maybe nettles or clovers, but nobody wants taproot) for a bar of metal.
