siege weapons and defence....

"The earliest engine was the battering ram, developed by the Assyrians, followed by the catapult in ancient Greece. The Spartans used battering rams in the Siege of Plataea in 429 BC, but it seems that the Greeks limited their use of siege engines to assault ladders, though Peloponnesian forces used something resembling flamethrowers.

The first Mediterranean people to use advanced siege machinery were the Carthaginians, who used siege towers and battering rams against the Greek colonies of Sicily. These engines influenced the ruler of Syracuse, Dionysius I, who developed a catapult in 399 BC.[2]"wiki

THE WALLS ARE TOO WEAK BREAKING THEM DOWN WITH YOUR FISTS PFFT,
The game already has one siege engine, add more and varied types of mounted weapons, and STRENGTHEN THE WALLS. Have been raided 3 times now through my palisades and they stole my tin. Also wouldn't it be nice to build catapults inside your wall and bombard people as they are basing on your Palisades. ^_^

Or you could pelt them with, y'know, arrows.

i would imagine that would work, but i would imagine a catapult to out-range arrows because if i try to fire at him his buddies fire back, probably goons. and i have a fantastic dream of having high damage expensive weapons, one hit killing a bear with a catapult, that'd be awesome.

but how bought siege towers and assault ladders instead of breaking down palisades and walls that crumble at a feather flick. more realism the attacking force will have to organize more than "hurr durr that guy only has palisades get boats steal his stuff..." palisades should only come down by siege weapons, and brick walls as well only proportionally stronger. fences protect against boars {fluffy little bundles of concentrated evil  } palisades protect against intruders on foot and walls to protect against siege weaponry.

Ladders (both rope and wooden) sound like a smashing idea from the realistic viewpoint and are very logical (think about what you would do if you had to get around a wall, I'm certain you wouldn't think about destroying it if you didn't have to). On the more practical side of matters, it would make griefing infinitely more easier...

... Uhh i wouldn't go around accusing people without proof...
Probably some group who gets a kick out of making you squirm. If i were you, make couple chests of tin ore, take a couple raw tin ore of chest, pack up your crap and wagon the crap out of there until you find a quieter place to settle down.

More seige weapons would be intersting, but game where death is very costly... doubt there will be many seiges that last a couple o days

Too early - let's have normal battles first, than go for the siege stuff.
How about battlements and/or towers that can be built next to palisades or brick walls or around cornerposts and turn the wall in question one-side passable by shots. Naturally, you shouldn't be able to shoot over walls at all.
Ideally, there should be a cover system (Wouldn't be surprised if there already is and I just don't know) that gives you a huge penalty to aiming when trying to shoot through/over objects.

Just implement a watch tower...
It can be a tower that a player can "ride" on by climbing a ladder to it.
A watch tower should give the user a bonus in accuracy when attacking enemies using range.
This makes attack a well defended fort more risky since there's that dude up there on the tower watching you.
Oh wait, this will make sniping bears easier.
