Give characters decay outlines based on HP

Postby Zirikana » Sat Aug 28, 2010 7:47 pm

You know how objects get that outline around them so you can see them behind other objects? And you know how decayed objects go from yellow to orange to red to show wear and tear?

Why not have your own character have a similar color transition based on health/HHP? I know it's almost purely aesthetic, but there's really no visual indicator at all of your state of health outside of that one little bar in the corner.

Frankly, it's a gripe i've had with just about every single game ever made, that damage/low health is very rarely indicated on the character sprite(s) in the game. It's not a priority for H&H by any means, and my outline idea may just be silly, but it's something to think about in general, i would say

Reason: a silly title

I share this gripe, and I've always wanted more indication that it's time to cover your friend's escape, or that it's too late to launch my most powerful attack, than just bars.

It's not a silly idea, but the implementation could be discussed.

Game developers should learn from games like Dead Space.
There you have a life meter and limited ammo, all visible, but no HUD.

While I think other things should come first (wide gates for wagons); this idea is not a bad one. It would be easier to communicate your status to your friends (ie. "help I'm in the red now" or "I'm still yellow so I'm ok", etc)

An exact representation of a players health should only be visible to that player, yes,
but you should also be able to see if another player is hurt.

Well I should haven't assumed what the op meant, but I was talking about the shp bar color changing not the actual character

Emotes might also help, along with character indicators... Like if your being chased by a friggin boar/bear and can't type out "HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!" and being mauled at the front gate of a fortress.

The GUI needs a little tweak to make some possible skills or feature always interactive there without the need to hotkey it...
Need shortcut keys to open inventory etc, because I find it a hassle as a gamer.
