Seasons and stuff...

Postby Rasta » Sat Sep 11, 2010 2:48 pm

Hi, I play this game for about month... and I love this, but if you get everything, skills, and all you do is making better quality it is a bit boring, so I got an idea to diversify game, enjoy...

SEASONS
In-game calendar: 1 in-game day is 8 rl hours so.. one in-game month will continue 10 rl days.

Spring: nothing special, like now, but more new trees and herbs appears. Maybe more boughs available. 4 in-game months

Summer: like now. 4 in-game months.

Autumn: leaves on the ground. Scents are harder to find, or have shorter duration. 2 in-game months.

Winter: snow everywhere, rivers and lakes are frozen. Harder to find wood/less wood gained. Scents are easier to find, or have longer duration. And... here comes all the fun, winter will be the hardest season to survive... 2 in-game months.

STUFF
Animals(would be harder to find):
-Winter wolf(may be tamed, and you get huskie then)
-Polar bear
-?(no ideas at the moment)

Items:
-granary(you may hold food there for winter)
-salt(as a preservative)
-ice cube(needed to make an igloo and other items)
-kind of shovel?(you get with this ice cubes from frozen lakes/rivers)
-chisel(with this you make ice table, ice chair,(no more ideas atm) from ice cubes)
-animal furs(you do with them warm clothes)
-sled(like cart but faster on the snow)
-something like wagon(don't know how to name it), but with skids and hanged by huskies
-?(no more ideas atm)

Fishing: you have to make a hole in frozen water, then if you are lucky you catch something. Same way you got water, but you need rope and bucket in addition, or just from well.

Plantations: are dead at the winter. I though about glasshouses but i don't know...

Living: you may live in your house, igloo, or hide in caves. In addition in caves you may found sleeping animals.

Activities: I think about funny thing, if you use 'dig' on the snow, you'll get snowballs that you can throw where you want, that don't do any damage but if someone get hit he have white head for 2-3 sec or something. You may build snowman.

Other:
-maybe add new bar (warm|cold) and depending on clothes it will change, it may make your stamina lose faster or slower, i don't know...
-i thought about new personal beliefs, for example +(spring and summer | autumn and winter)+ but I don't know what it may change, no ideas atm...

So... I think this would diversify game and make it more funny and harder in the winter, only 2 months in-game year but are you remember when you began playing? I was like... omg im dying... im starving... rat.. RAT! yes...! <om nom nom> boar... BOAR OMG! RUn! xD that was funny, but now I have no problems with food etc.. so because of that i think there should be time where experienced players will have 'problems', and of course if you dont want to face that you may not log in and just wait... it will be only 20 rl days...
I am open to criticism, feel free to say what do you think, what you would change or add.
Btw, sorry for my english... I hope you understand everything...
Enjoy!

There is a lot going on in your post, so I'll address it one thing at a time.

First, many of these ideas (seasons, bears/wolves, salt) have been suggested. A bunch of times. The number is so large that it would be hard to reach it with an exponential equation; however, you do have some interesting takes on some other points.

Next, I would suggest starting/joining a village if you are bored. (If you haven't already.)

Now as far as your suggestions:

All of your seasons should last for an equal amount of time. They are in real life, and it just seems unfair to fall/winter, :)

40 days seems a little long for a season (as far as keeping the attention of the players). Many people don't play the game for that long, and we don't want them to quit just because they jumped into the middle of winter and the next season change is a month away.

You suggested a lot of things for in the winter time (sleds, igloos), but if winter is so short (even at your numbers it was only 1/6 of the year) these things would either lose their use quickly or melt (in the case of the igloo).

Completely icing the water and killing the crops is a dangerous step to take. I see what you're getting at, but for some people, crops are a huge (if not an only) source of food and to remove them entirely for any period of time would be detrimental to the health of many players. "and of course if you dont want to face that you may not log in and just wait... it will be only 20 rl days..." We aren't looking to make the game so completely miserable that there are only 6 people online for a month or so.

I do like the snowball idea. :D It adds a sense of "everyday life" to the game.

I am all for the idea of adding new degrees of difficulty to the game, but winter for new players looks like it would be a major pain. If any difficulty is added, it should be able to be taken on at wish, not forced on unwanting players. Besides, there are plenty of built in difficulties for experience players you seem to be forgetting. The fact that you can die and lose a large chunk of what you've been working for comes to mind. It gives players an incentive to build their stats/quality so that they don't have a disadvantage if confrontation arises.
Of course, you've obviously put in more thought than a lot of the people who "suggest" seasons. I just think that doing climates would help incorporate some of your ideas more solidly than seasons would. Keep brainstorming. We are only alpha testers. :D
Zen always wins.

No to seasons, but a possible "snow biome" can work if it's designed at a very northern area.

Just replace trees with spruces only, and replace bears with polar bears. Digging the snow nets you snow materials for whatever you'd use there, requires a bucket to store so meh.

@Repercussionist

Ok, I understood : ) and you're right, I just wanted to share my ideas and sorry if topic was suggested before... I searched but didn't found... never mind ;p

So... maybe like you said climates would pass the exam ;p far, far north will be for example arctic zone, and far far south will be desert.
By the way... is there end of the map? or maybe world is a 'ball' like earth?

The game is about Slavic and Germanic myth and legend. Thus I highly doubt there will be desert or arctic climat in game. Tundra - an usual forest with lots of swamps and only a few rivers for one SG, with tameable deers which are fed with moss and snow near world`s borders - maybe.
What I`d really like to see in game is normal lake. Lakes are really bigger IRL.
