Utilizing Caves More

Postby refuge » Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:39 am

Hi everyone,
While doing my daily walk though various caves (hunting for cavebulbs, of course), I came to realize something. ¨Wow", these sights are really cool, beautiful, even. These large caverns, underground lakes, openings in various places, huge rooms, caves really are pretty cool.

The underground world is huge, but I think it's being wasted. Usually the most people get from caves, is hunting for cavebulbs or prospecting for a mine. I never see another hearthling in a cave, and these guys really are missing out.

So I propose this: Why not utilize caves more? Maybe the ability to lay rocks down on cave ground would be nice, another idea, would be to have the stalagmites gives higher quality rocks, or the underground lakes give higher quality water (after all, it's "untapped" and "untainted", right?). I can see complications with doing something such as, building your hearthfire in a cave (tracking would be a nightmare!) but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to lay rocks or the sort, perhaps.

I wouldn't mind seeing any sort of life inside caves as well; I recall someone mentioning a cave troll before; that could be really interesting; imagine one of these sneaking out of the shadows.

But yeah, caves could be utilized more, more resources (or higher quality resources), etc, can come from them -- this would encourage people to venture into the underworld more often.

I suggest that you can go spelunking into caves and is able to make multiple passage ways to some places using a cave.

A cave being used for basic resources is one thing, but a cave being used for traveling is another.

I definitely like the ideas for the cave resources, I believe the problems with this are that as it stands there are no quality spots in caves.

Does that require a reset to happen? I wonder...

I'd love to see caves utilized more in the future, perhaps a way to even expand them but it would have to be very hard, and some form of oxygen levels as well the farther you are from an entrance  (when instant porting is gone)

If caves do get a whole revamping done to them, i'd love to see more chamber-like areas added to the underground mapgen, rather than just long winding tunnels. Perhaps more cavern-like caves exist elsewhere in the world, but all the ones i've seen look more like labyrinths than caverns. Trying to settle permanently in that sort of cave would be quite frustrating...

Just for the record, the devs are painfully aware that caves are boring and alot of potential is wasted here. So you can be sure they will come up with something in the future.

I believe one person said having tracking if a HF is in a cave they can be summoned at the entrance.

And I believe a response was given as to why that can't happen.

I'd just like to point out that cave floors are already rocks...

But other than that I couldn't agree more. I intentionally set up my house next to a cave, just because I wanted to. (This was back before I knew that much about Haven, and I thought there might be something interesting in them.) Then I realized all I could do in it was make cheese and find foragables and I became dismayed. :(
