Village Technologies

Postby Ferinex » Mon Jul 27, 2009 10:27 pm

How about technologies that an entire village can learn that allow the construction of certain buildings/objects within their area of influence that make different processes easier/faster? If you limit a village to choosing one or two tech branches, it would cause village specialization and encourage people to actually trade and interact with each other. It is an MMO, after all ;) It would also give people reason to actually pick up and move if they wish to live in a village with a different specialization. One argument against this idea that I foresee is that it is unfair to hermits. In defense: villages already give players advantages over hermits, such as the ability to regen stamina using authority, and the ability to protect infrastructure such as semi-public roads. Hermits choose to live that way, and if they sincerely want the benefits the new objects/buildings would offer, nothing is stopping them from moving into a village or creating one with alts. : ) I don't want this idea to come off as pushy, it was just an idea that popped into my head. :P

Edit: For example, an object like the loom that works faster/creates more from less.

That sounds somewhat good to me... I'm thinking more in terms of technology, though. Not so much specialization... I don't think my village would be very happy if they all had to mine, or all had to farm, etc. We're happy to have our own niches. But then again, it would be a lot better for trade.

It would be nice if the entire village could buy another level of advancement, such as gunpowder-cannons, boats-sails or something else that requires more than one facet of industry.

Looking back at my post, it seems to be a muddled up mess, but I'll post it anyway because I'm to lazy to clarify.

Indeed it would force birds of a feather to flock together; but if you were able to choose 2 or 3 'advancements' out of many, you could each still do your own thing : ) Besides, individual members of a village could still continue doing what they are doing without using the new additions ;)

The idea can use some work, but I trust the devs can figure it out better than any of us. It is their game heh : P

I am not sure if it fits into the picture of the devs but it seems like an OK idea. But there's a couple things that need some refinement though. Like how exactly technology should advance. Over time, as a single object that needs its progress bar filled, several objects that need to be built and tested to simulate scientific tests, etc.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Technology could be like a giant food bar for crafting. Each time you craft something valuable, it boosts your village's technology bar, or alternatively each time anyone in the village eats something your village's tech bar would go up. In FEPs-and crafting valuables like steel would make different types of CEPs (Crafting event points)... Steel crafting stuff would give industry CEPs.

I wonder what the Devs might think of this idea.

Woot! Let's nuke Laketown!

Super Smelter town could have a lot of miners and only a few silk makers, the miners produce a whole lot of steel, the silk makers produce a whole lot of silk threads.

Super Loom town has fewer miners but a HEAP of silk makers and flax growers, produces only a small amount of steel, but LOTS of weaved silk cloth.

SST and SLT trade steel and silk threads for linen and silk cloths, everyone wins?

Yeah, I like it... then there would also be SV/BT (super vinyard/brewery town) and SB-HT (super bear hunting town) and suddenly, we have ships and are moving resources across water so we need SST (super ship town)! Super ship town makes its money off trades, life is good for every town. And we can have Pirates and Vikings.

Alternatively, Super Smelter town could fashion steel weapons and mail and simply take the silk by force. A more classic Win/lose scenario. The hippies gets to lose.
