Use the stealth skill to avoid wild animals

Postby Coriander » Wed Jul 29, 2009 2:44 am

I would like to see the stealth skill expanded to include shielding a character from wild animal detection.
It could help a thief escape into mordor. It could also add a stalking aspect to hunting.
Getting stalked, well, attacked, by a high level animal is part of the fun, but being able to slip past one undetected would be fun too.

Some animals running away, instead of trying to stomp on you, would be nice also. It would make people hunt deer with bows, most of the time, and it certainly would make stealthy hunting more useful.

Yeah, I like that idea too. You'd need a bow, but you'd also need to be able to take it out in one hit... dilemma...

Lower deer HP a lot. Have perception increase bow damage. Worst comes to worst, organize a hunting party.

Yeah, I look forward to bows being practical again. In PvP, bows should be a needed asset. Snipers, and archer support should be considered high priorities when planning an attack/assassination.

Agreed. I'd also like to see some of the weaker animals be afraid of some characters and try to flee.

very clever, this could go along with the "animals fear fire" idea

Love it. Here's another one - wind direction. Put some tell tale signs in the world that can let you figure out what way the wind is blowing. Either that, or into the GUI. Then, have your scent get carried down wind some direction in an invisible tail. When hunting animals who flee, stay downwind of them to get closer.

The devs have mentioned skills being learnt through quests in the future. Maybe, some special skills could require difficult/rare quests. Imagine gaining a 'wolf nose' or something by way of a quest from a shamanic character, and being able to 'see' scents left by anybody. Rather than being of the picking up sort, they could be just a general 'living thing passed this way' sort, that lets you know that there is an animal/person in the vicinity, and leads you to them.

Remember the old 'travel up a wadable river trick' to hide scents? That could be part of a thieves repetoir to get away. Could also make bogs 'scent free', hence a great place to hide in to give people the slip.

I wouldn't mind having hits give a slowing debuff.
It could be elaborated on, though.
