Support for small personal spaces within villages

Postby theTrav » Wed Jul 29, 2009 6:24 am

Laketown is for the most a communal settlement. I however like to keep some small odds and ends to myself in my own personal space.
I'd really like a way to do this that:
a) Is more than trivially safe from people with the black arts (somewhere between trespassing and brick wall vaults)
b) Does not take up a ton of space

a - Because people within the settlement have a tendancy to ignore my claim marker, and don't really think about privacy of other players
b - Because I like the way that lake-town is all close together, so I end up seeing a lot of the other players in my town. If we all had our own personal palisades then the town would have to be far more spread out.

The ability to put a lock on my cabin door and only claim the inside as my own (or maybe just a 4x2 section in front of it for the display garden) would be ideal.
I don't mind if it takes the same resource effort as a whole brick wall vault just to lock a single door if that makes the thieves any happier, I also don't mind if it's pick-able with a substantial investment.
I just want a way to create a personal space without inconveniencing other people in the town more than I have to.

That might be nice. Pinevalley is a much smaller village, and I don't think we'd have need for, or even use, such a thing but I like the idea.

Lockable cabins seems like a logical step from where we are now.

Hehe I assume you've seen Bottleneck these days? Not only is it huge but lots of people have palisades around not only their homes but chunks of land with gardens and drying racks and all that. I like how it looks but then some people do live a fairly long walk from each other.

Lockpicking would be a nice solution, Maybe a seperate black arts skill and require lockpicks. It would be an intermediary thing, and if lever-activated doors were implemented, then the normal locks on palisades and brickwalls could be replaced so that they could not be so easily bypassed

I would not go as far as locking doors. I'd suggest locking chests (craft padlock and right click on a chest with it). But i guess Jorb and Loftar should make it into a decent sized update. Some lockable containers and a keychain would be nice along with door locks (and trapdoor locks..).
IF they like the idea that is.

A different approach to the same idea would be hidden storage. The feature could be incorporated during construction. It would allow for some private storage space that requires no key, just knowledge of the exact location to access.
I would make it an expensive skill to acquire, and possibly vulnerable to very high theft skills.

Yes, I visited bottle neck about 3 weeks ago, and I saw a lovely (but deserted) main street with houses all quite close to each other, and then further out I saw a lot of quite spacious home-steads that looked like they were effectively self sufficient.

Yeah, well locking doors IS a bit 20th century paranoia, I suppose if I could have locked chests in my house and a small (much smaller than current minimum) claim at the entrance then I'd be happy with that.

To be honest even being able to have a smaller claim than my current one would be nice.

How do you like the round-post fences? They do take up as much ground space as the palisades, but not as much "visible" space, and they give the added protection of an intruder needing the Vandalism skill to get past them, if they are on your claim.

It is a bit hard for me imagine that their physical extent would take up a lot of otherwise needed village space, but maybe you are of a different opinion?

In relation to them, we'll probably add growable hedges within too long. :)

What about towns that use mines for housing? You need to come check out Gooncastle mine sometime.
