Easier placement of liftable items

Postby Orgondor » Sun Oct 24, 2010 10:22 am

I would love to see a toggle option for viewing the placement of a liftable item in the same way in the same way it's done when building. This would make it a lot easier to place things aligned and close together or close to walls.
To clarify I'm not asking for a way to place things grid aligned, that's obviously in the game already. I want to see how it would look when placed, in the same way you do when building.
This would obviously need some sort of toggle option, like shift r-click for grid placement, or a button for switching modes...

Did a quick search for "liftable items" and didn't find a suggestion like this, sorry if it's been posted before.

you know that you can already shift + r click and the item will be dropped on a grid, right?

It would have proven your point much better and also proven you really do understand how to fight people and not only how to slaughter helpless sheep.

Preferably with some additional visual feedback on whether a object can actually be placed, or not, on the targeted position. (just in case ;) )

The way lifting is currently set up (with the place option being a secondary click) it seems like it would be difficult to have something that doesn't really interfere with everyday lifting, say carrying a boat across land. Perhaps a compromise would be to have a visual indicator similar to that of building show up when you hold down ctrl, if that's even possible.

he's saying he wants a toggle similar to the toggle for placing it on the grid. ctrl + rclick maybe?

Well, I pretty much stopped as soon as I glanced at the sentence I read :)
Also, I don't think there is much use for a toggle like that sab. I mean, really how hard is it to press down the shift button for less than a second?

You have poor reading comprehension. Using shift+rclick is a "toggle" for placing lifted items on a grid. The OP knows about this. This isn't what he's talking about or asking for. He wants a similar "toggle" where instead of merely placing the lifted item on the grid, it makes the cursor similar to when building objects so it's easier to visualize the placement.

Should that not be [ctrl]+[some other key] or just [ctrl]. (+Character is lifting a object.)
rclick, or assuming RMClick, is "drop lifted object" so that would be a little late. Unless RMClick is split into a [RMClick-Down]:show placement preview, and [RMClick-Up]:Do drop lifted object. (in this last case, no additional toggle key seems to be needed. works directly for [shift]+[RMClick] to.)

Pretty much this. I know I wouldn't use it, on the other hand it doesn't hurt either if people really want this.
