Dungeons?

Postby BlaineCraner » Sun Nov 07, 2010 2:07 pm

OK. Here’s my humble little idea.

Dungeons!

And no, I don’t want the dev’s to make something like a “WoW instance”. My idea is simple(… I think). Let the players make their own dungeon if they want to! You can build a village, farm, et cetera from scratch, so why not a dungeon underground or in a cave? The players could learn how to build mechanical traps, fill the caves with monsters, “enchantments”, secret doors or with riddles and puzzles.

Maybe something like a bandits lair(traps)? A vault for keeping valuable goods (secret doors)? A temple of trials (riddles & monster, remember the Draracle from Lands of Lore)?

Sooo… what do you think?

… and sorry for any errors in my English. : P

Living in caves, building an underground lair? Sounds fine.

Trap doors and other deadly mechanisms to guard precious goods? Never thought of such a way to protect stuff, but this might be interesting.

Enchantments and monsters? Depends. I think jorb has quite a good idea about what kind of magic he wants in-game, and I trust he does the right decisions when implementing new things that go in this direction. Decay shield magic, for example, would be just as nice to see as cave trolls or lindworms or vodyanoi. However, I don't think I'd want to see a WoW battlefield filled to the brim with ugly mobs.

Your idea of players "being able to make their own dungeon"... well, loftar would only have to flip the switch on objects' buildable flags in caves. As long as the cave tracking mechanism doesn't work, however, this is not going to happen.

I think it would be cooler if dungeons were part of the world, appearing randomly at randomn places on the map for a fixed amount of time, you'd have to defeat/bypass the guards (humans? mythological creatures?) and then at the end get randomn goodies :D

it would really break the monotony sometimes and provide for action without having to go to war with another vllage.

That's what makes the difference between the WoW crowd and the HnH crowd, I think... We are able to make our own drama, they aren't.

Why did you change my name to wolfGang in your quote?

I think it would be better to avoid random dungeons with random loot. The game could change to yet another WoW clone, and we don’t want that to happen, yes?

About the monsters. If “mobs” are too much then maybe just one monster, that is in some kind “special”. A simple example would be “The werewolf”. You would need silver arrows and swords to kill the beast making it some sort of a quest to obtain such items. Maybe the werewolf could be a player character and would try to stop the "heros" from obtaining silver?
If even that is too much then what about a hungry/diseased but really big bear? You could build a cage and maybe get some “bait”?
What about that Ent-Dryad thingy? What if someone finds a way to catch and “taint” it? There is a “necromancers robe” out there, right?

About enchantments. I am aware that magic in H&H should be more subtle and sublime, but it still can be used as a defense mechanism IMO. You could use dreams to put player characters to sleep or to form illusions and scare them away?

Player run "boss monsters" would have potential to be awesome.

I say we focus all our jorbs and loftars into producing wolves and horses before H&H turns into a dungeon crawler...OR NOT, ye' know dragons or dinosaurs would be pretty cool..
