Holiday Celebration

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Holiday Celebration

Perhaps we could have small aesthetic updates on the holidays?

Ex: Chickens turn into turkeys on Thanksgiving, or turning the Sprucecap into a Santa Hat on Christmas?

I also think snow would be extremely cool as well as long as it didn't coincide with the various groundtypes.

Something like that might end up being too controversial... If you celebrate Christmas, you'll end up with some people getting upset about Haven & Hearth supporting Christianity (or a Christian origin) in a game where you can worship your ancestors and sacrifice things to them. Then there'd be people who demand ___ is also celebrated, they'd complain and call Christmas celebrations no more than bias, then they'd threaten us all that Haven & Hearth will never be successful because that will cause it to lose many players. I don't think either of those things are really suited for the time period this game is set in, anyway. It would imply we're living around the 1800s or 1900s. Next thing you know people will be wanting pistols and microwaves.

I think snow could be interesting as an uncommon occurence with nothing to do with the current month in real life, though.

Well I was just assuming that the community could handle mainstream holidays being acknowledged seeing as we aren't THAT diverse.

Edit: Also the idea sprouted from remembering how Runescape always did/does those holiday things, and they're most certainly successful...

Edit2: And set in the same era from my understanding!

Runescape also has magic, though. It isn't really a game designed to make sense. Haven & Hearth's magic is limited to hearth fires and being able to magically build things without a hammer and nails. I don't think celebrating Christmas would be the end of the world, myself, but I also don't really see a reason to do so. As many people will tell you, there are more important features the developers could be working on... though I don't know how far these "important things" stray from also being novelties to make the game more enjoyable.
I think I quite like the way Haven & Hearth tries to keep a consistent setting, though.

What I think would be more interesting is if players created their own traditions/holidays, perhaps to the extent that the developers would consider adding new items to help celebrate these made up occasions. Seeing 75% of the players wearing Santa hats for the month of December just doesn't really strike me as interesting (been there, done that).

Most Christmas traditions and symbols, other than ones directly related to Jesus, are pagan in origin, see Yule

In anycase you can do this yourself by downloading TheTrav's res tool and editing the res.jar with Christmas graphics

Jorb already looks a lot like Santa Claus in game, with his white beard and red cloak. He doesn't have a red hat, but that's just enough difference from the modern santa to make him look like the real deal instead of a guy handing out promotional samples at a department store. Maybe Jorb should just visit every active player on Christmas and give them a present? Loftar can put on a druid cloak and be an elf carrying the presents:)

Touche, although I think most people immediately think of either Christianity or a 20th century commercial holiday when Christmas is mentioned, so it would probably be controversial regardless. Oh, and I forgot to mention the matter of green Santa vs. red Santa...

He'd probably give everyone a large, horse-shaped present with colourful wrapping and bows. What could be inside?! We'd open it up to find our characters knee deep in coal.

I think the best way to make this happen would be to devise our own holidays. Haven & Hearth is not real life, so lets have different celebrations. After all, we're kind of our own culture (Many cultures, actually), so lets reinforce that.
