Dev's have stated that they will most likely not place names above people's heads. So you're pretty much stuck with using the rclick > chat.

You should allow users to op into showing your names, so party members have names over their head and so do village members.

There should be *some* way to differentiate people. It just makes no sense for clothing to be the only thing that's different between any two characters. Facial features on portraits would be nice, but then we'd need a way to view portraits other than aggroing.

If you catch thieves in the act, for example, they are unlikely to introduce
themselves, but you should still be able to recognize them later on.
I'd say you should be able to mark/tag players as you please.

And if we're going for realism (ha!) one should be able to spot family resemblance's too, at least if one's per is high - and recognize newb-son-of-thief as looking rather like his dad

Facial recognition is one of humans strongest innate abilities. There should be some reflection of this. Also some hats/hoods should interfere with this a bit. wear a headsmans hood and no one will recognize you, but everyone will automatically trat you with suspicion. Like a guy wearing a ski mask walking into a bank...why is he hiding his face?

But it's true that once you get used to them, you can pretty easily even recognize animals.
