Packed Dirt ground less succeptible to decay

Postby AnnaC » Sat Nov 20, 2010 11:37 pm

Well I've been trying to construct some wilderness roads, and I liked all the new landscaping options. Packed dirt trails are a lot more sensible (and easier to build) than fully paving, especially when you're doing trails between water networks in the middle of nowhere, by yourself. Also there is the bonus that you could always straight pave the packed dirt at a later time given the materials and labor.

But unfortunately, packed dirt decays quickly; from my observations (which are not precise I'll admit) packed dirt seems to decay as quickly as normal plowed earth. I would like this changed somewhat, as any road maintenance is impossible on such a road. It doesn't help that you can not plow through packed dirt, so any maintenance has to be done by hand.

It shouldn't last indefinitely before decaying, like paved land, of course; but as it is there is little realistic incentive to use the packed dirt, for this type of thing it seemed ideal for (unless you're a masochist that misses tedious decay maintenance). :|

I'm pretty sure it decays less than plowed earth, since it only decays from the borders. Nevertheless, you probably have a point; decay will be decreased after the next server restart.

Ok fair enough like I said my observations were hardly precise about it. Also I made my trail mainly a 3-tile wide; I took 3 plowing passes adjacent to eachother then packed it down after the last pass. Since this was the case, most of the trail would've been on the border; so it's possible a wider trail won't decay as quickly. I just made a new addition to that trail today which is a little wider, so I'll keep an eye on that and see if there is a change. (Last time, I wasn't even done with my current segment before I started noticing the decay.)

Edit: another thing, can you no longer grass mudflats?

So it was a bug that you could to begin with? Ah alright I wasn't aware of that. You can still pave and then grass the pavement so that's fine too. :)

</3 Loftar. My cows are in a giant palisaded in grass land. Thank you for now making my grass take longer to regrow.

no, i mean it was a bug that you couldn't grass mudflat after the latest update, but loftar fixed it

bare patches of grass are not the same as packed dirt

Ah, never really messed around with the packed dirt for aesthetic reasons, assumed it had the same mechanics as bare grass.
