River Platform (Solution to Bridges)

River Platform (Solution to Bridges)

Postby WRB852 » Sun Nov 21, 2010 12:07 pm

So I was thinking about the problem with bridges and the way the game is set up, and here's what I came up with.

A lift-able River Platform object that would take up the space of a 2x2 grid. When dropped into the shallows of a river, it would be immediately deleted, and transform the spaces around it into shallows as well. (excluding ground/soil of course)

The use of it would be of course, to walk up to the edge of the shallows you'd like to extend, drop the platform, and thus expand them out 1 grid space, and 3 wide.

I'm thinking this object would require a hefty amount of wood and metal, to not only withstand the strength of a current, but make it a very tedious task to create. I mean, bridge-building is only reserved for the greatest of societies, right?

So feel free of course to offer your ideas, or comment on mine. If this has been suggested before, I'm deep-fully sorry, and will lock it right away.

A platform seem to not exist in a RL, but filling the river with thousands of stones is practised. So maybe instead of building a platform it can be that we just put say 1000 stones per a deep water tile to make it shallow.

I always say fords would be a great idea in my opinion, and since the world didn't make any, hearthling-made ones would suffice. :D

They should probably decay over time, and be pretty labor intensive to produce, of course. But it'd add an interesting aspect to the world.

Like this hasn't been discussed before.....

This will be addressed in World 4 with the new map gen.

Done and thought of a solution without seeing this topic. . . Someone mentioned bridges in IRC and that got me thinking . . . of all the ways to implement it. . .

Some random and not so random ideas . . . .

1. Bridges need to be require team work to build in a reasonable period of time if not days for just 1 person to build a small one and 4-5 days to build a decent one
2.No Metal required for bridges. . . . really this is to costly. I don't mind it being expensive just not that much. . . metal is a finite resource and i say already has a high demand.
3. *Rope is a must* 2 per tile this would make building a 10x10 dock cost 200 rope or better yet 2k string
4. *Stone this could be used to support the post underwater, holding it in place*10 per tile this mean 1k for a 10x10
5.*Blocks to be used as post of bridge/dock* 12 per this would require a log each tile also 100 logs for a 10x10 or 1.2k blocks
6.*planks for the the top of bridge* 4 per tile this again requires a log per tile 100 logs for 10x10 or 400 planks
7.* *??BONE GLUE?? could be used as an extra means of holding the bridge together and make requirements even higher** 2 per tile 200 for 10x10 or 2k bone

OK OK OK don't start flaming at me just yet im not done yet with concepts. . . .

I know some are gonna hate me for even saying "DECAAYY!!!!!" not saying any name *cough*Jackard*COUGH* :P but lets face it this game needs DECAY in some forms or another and WITH WAYS OF COMBATING IT!!!!

So on that note:
Wood Bridges should decay (claims *COULD* be an exception). Also Q of the bridge built could either effect its HP and/or Soak*ONLY AT EXTREME Q lvls* till it can last for a few weeks without needing repair

Now for the DECAY HATERS DREAM!!!!

I Present the Stone Bridge * Stone working button maybe????* This bridge will cost INSANE amounts of natural resources and require the work of a lot of hands to build in a timely fashion *in days time* This bridge should last longer than the wood bridge but still accessible to villages without metal but the will to put in the HARD WORK and the man power to get it done!!!!

not going into as much detail as above but you would need

Stone <===== Main Resource of course lets say 50 per tile?????? would need to be something that would take a few ppl a day AT LEAST to collect that would be 5k stone for 100 tiles * my first thought was 100 per 10k stone for 100 tiles

Bone glue to hold stone together? more than the wood bridge
wood? smaller amount than wood bridge??? but still a lot to keep it expensive

Now for a bridge THAT DOESN'T DECAY *the only way to get rid of it is to destroy it and this can not be done with a battering ram it will require someone with the strength to knock down brick walls

Would require massive Bricks, Wood, Bone Glue, rope, AND FINALLLLY the not so hard part but expensive part the iron bars needed per tile

with the strength of bricks and metal = no decay
strength of stone and wood = Slow to minimum decay
Weakness of rope, bone glue, and wood = few days decay

ALL of this is just random BLURTING of the ideas that just rushed into my head. Im sorry if its a little hard to read im in a dark room, on a laptop that like to go on the fritz sometimes, and i have ADHD soo ya thats BioHaze for ya

ALL of the above is just a rough example of the concept i think it could work for this kind of realistic game

The reason for the decay is to not make things completely permanent and if u want permanent YOU HAVE TO REALLLLLYYY PAY THE PRICE!!!!!

*ONLY CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM PLZ *

Thank you,

BioHaze

*I an part if a villiage that mainly is road builders, Since these thing would require alot of team work this could be offered as a service to other villages, this would give more meanin to roleplaying a road builder. We usally usally like to work in teams. . . one team plows the road, one team paves, another paves the sides and another harvest and plants flax along side the road while makeing linen and rope. . . Then maybe someone to build torches along side the flax*

Now when building these bridges it should take all them ppl doin different stuff just to build a bridge

The reason bridges would be nice *got flame on why they were even needed*:

Sure you have a boat and a raft wow great both can be built by a single person in a short period of time. . . they also show for in there ability and storage capacity, rafts are EXTREMELY SLOW. Now lets imagine what the next step to be able to drive your wagon across a river or make a dock for trade and fishing *maybe even bigger merchant boats later in the game that can only dock with such bridges/docks* *even Later on down the line who knows Age of Empire still Ramming Ships* but thats getting off subject

These ideas should loosely stick to the time era of the game and be realistic *example: Its possible to build it as big as u like the real question is do you have the resources/man power/ and time to build it that big*
