Dear Jorb & Loftar. Regarding hammers.

Postby Roze » Tue Dec 14, 2010 9:27 pm

First, i dunno if this has been brought up, I cant be arsed to read through pages and pages of topics to post on an ancient thread that will likely be overlooked. So i started this here.

So, I have this smithy hammer. That looks really badass when running around with it.

I was curious as to why there is no combat abilities for hammers.

Its known that war-hammers were used back in the day, and it would make sense for them to be included among axes and swords as melee weapons.

You could add moves like "Bludgeon" or "Batter" that could bridge the gap between axes and swords as far as move costs and effects. Possibly even have the weapons themselves be the middle ground between using a blade and using a B12 axe.

It saddens me greatly that my hammer is useless in combat. The very tool that is used to craft such wonderful armour should be able to be turned against that same armour when the need arises.

Edit: I guess all I want is an answer as to why hammer's haven't been implemented as weapons yet. Or if they ever will be.

Yeah, it would be fun for flavour if eq like picks, hammers and frying pans could be used as weapons, but they should really have low damage, no real moves etc. You do not use a smithy hammer successfully in combat.

It would also be fun if all liquids could be drank from all the different cups, just with different bonuses.

Well, historicly, war-hammers were used to great effect against light armour like leather and chain, relying on crushing the opponents body rather than penetrating their armour, and war-picks completely devastated plate armour.

That's like comparing swords and letter openers. If there's going to be war hammers, they should be war hammers.

hammers haven't been implemented as weapons yet for the same reasons that there aren't knives, daggers, spears, halberds, more than one type of shield, maces, flails, whips, one-handed metal axes, metal arrowheads, fletched arrows, etc etc etc. for similar reasons, there is only one type of glove or leg armor, belts are useless... i could go on but i hope by now you get the point.

So in short, because the game is still in Alpha and the Dev's haven't gone that much into the combat aspect of the game yet, or simply don't intend to.

This is what I sort of assumed, I just wanted some sort of confirmation. As my vilages smith, i look forward to living up to my theme song.

Excerpt from Falconer's 'Lord of the Blacksmiths."

"The lord of the blacksmiths
Keeps forging on
Through the endless time
Master of the anvil
Alloys the metals
With an essence of magic

With wisdom and sorcery
From the beginning of time
Magnificent works are forged
For gods and for mighty kings
Uncrushable shields
Power-belts and magic rings
Swords that never miss
Sceptres and crowns and other things."

Medieval warhammers, are actually what we call war-picks. If you type warhammer in google, or look it up in medieval warfare books, you will see the relatively small hammer with a very sharp steel spike.

Warhammers, like the big clumsy blocks of iron you see too much nowadays in games, were rarely used. Because they were big, fat & clumsy, but it gives World of Warcraft players a kick to run around with that kind of shit.

Indeed, if war-hammers were actual hammers, they would probably have been only slightly larger than a working hammer. Favoring light weight for ease of use in combat, while maintaining enough mass to deliver suitably crushing blow's to lightly armoured opponents.

I would also like to clarify that i dont expect huge cocknocker two handed hammers that no mortal man should be able to lift let alone use in combat.

All tools should be usable as weapons to some extent IMO, but we also need bad ass-hammers and other weapons of the time!
