Straw pack

Postby partinez » Sun Dec 26, 2010 12:22 pm

Hello everyone! and merry christmas!
I've searched and didn't find anything about this.
Everyone having a wheat farm knows that the straw can become a problem. Straw can be used to feed animals, making straw baskets, etc, but what if You want to store it?
Under basic mechanics there should be the ability to build a simple machine to pack straw, (for example, 50 straw units). It should be used like a plow. You right click it and walk over the straw on the ground, when it reaches 50 units it leaves a straw pack on the ground which can be stored on your basement so you can feed the animals later.

Idk if there is a name for the "straw packed", but I hope you like the idea.

I got the same idea when reading the "mill and flour sacks" thread. I think there is no need for a machine or mechanism, a string would be just fine. The spanish word for that is "alpaca" but I don't know if there is a direct translation, maybe "bale of hay" or something like that would fit.

This idea is also linked somehow with the "stocks" idea, I don't like to store certain things in construction signs, so every elegant storage solution is welcome for me.

An extremely fluffy, almost horse-like animal that can go from giving birth to getting it on in no time flat?

The same word means both things, the animal and the bale of hay.

+1 with two storage units:
just take a dozen units of straw and any string, and you get a hay sheaf to carry as a regular 1x1 item in your inventory. using the hay sheaf on anything (chicken coop, food trough) or adding it to any building site would work and give any excess straw back, but the string would be lost to make the storage at least cost something. it should also work as fuel ;)
taking many more units of straw (50 or even 100) would bild a hay stack, a liftable construction from which straw could be picked the same way we chip stones from boulders. maybe loosing a unit or two of straw in total (e.g. use 50 to build, but get 49 before it disappears) to pay for the saved amount of running around.

which takes a lot of space, needs paved ground and you run the risk of someone clicking "build". We're looking for alternatives

And a bale of hay doesn't take up much place? And paved ground, i never saw someone with a big settlement and a big amount of straw without stone or grass land in his settlement. And no one can click build if the sign is in your stone mansion.
