Some way to scare/de-aggro animals

Postby sonerohi » Wed Dec 29, 2010 6:26 pm

Now that slings have been changed, I cannot just take two seconds to kill a boar when one goes apeshit in the forest. I also don't have the willpower to struggle through the melee combat mechanics. I can't just take a KO and keep going because animals still love to murderfuck your body once you get knocked out. So, there is an easy and obvious solution in the midst of this. Why can't I just terrify the damn thing? Torches have no practical use, let me stab a boar in the face with a burning stick.

I wouldn't mind this idea at all, and I agree that without the quick dispatching capabilities of a sling the aggressive animals are a little more annoying.

I like the torch aspect too, but I don't think a little flame would be enough to scare off a bear of course ;)

However to me this would just be an easily abusable mechanic, you agro a boar, deer, fox or something your self to kill it, and then could easily scare it off taking no damage and giving you plenty of time to hit it again.

An easy fix for that would be that once an animal has taken damage it can no longer be scared. Realistic too, wounded animals will fight desperately.
Also, it shouldn't be possible to scare a bear, at least no a high-level one ;)

some kind of way to scare away boars and bears from your farm, sort of like scarecrows?

No, like an active way to scare animals off as you go through the woods. When you read epic war stories, you see the good guys in their infantry columns, quaking the ground with their footsteps and scaring away the forest. Not a massive fighting force struggling to pull supply wagons through hordes of critters descending upon them.

I don't think those armies were afraid to try combat mechanics either.

;) well played. Still, the point stands that just walking somewhere is tedious due to wildlife. I don't care how is done, but getting rid of that tedium would be swell.

Unfortunately the point of aggressive animals in the wilderness is to act as a barrier to travel and activity. To make the wilderness wild. Conversely, animals near villages become weak and docile as it is a civilized and "safe" area. This pushes peaceful characters to stay near villages and rivers and game hunters into the wilds and away from civilization.

While I agree the presence of boars behind every freakin tree is outrageous at times I think a hassle-free pass through the forest would be against the nature of the game. It would be like me asking for level 10 bears and deer waiting outside my village gates. Good luck with your idea, but as for me: -1

Slings will hopefully be useful again soon, so don't despair quite yet.

^ very well said.

animals are kicking your ass now? that's exactly the point of them. also, you can't be hassled with combat mechanics? enjoy getting raped by any random swinging dick with a sword and a bad attitude
