Safety Zone at the ring

For god's sake make the Ring of Brodgar a No-PvP zone.
Need I say more.

More to the point, how else can I carry out full moon sacrifices?
...

But seriously, its not that straightforward.

Lets say the main problem is people killing newbies at the ring.

In response, I might say in defense of leaving it as it is:

1). Killing takes investment in the dark arts.
2). Killing leaves a scent. Therefore, a person can be hunted down, and lose their investment as per (1) when they are killed.

Moreover, a problem with changing it to no pvp might be:

3). Somebody could kill a newbie elsewhere, or do who knows what crime, and then just hang out safely in the ring, where nobody can touch them.

(That said, I do completely think the RoB area should have some kind of protection that prevents people building crap that makes it look ugly.)

In that case give new people say a 24 hour protection from being attacked, like most MMOs do.
It means people don't get pissed off from people killing them and taking all their stuff when they've just started.

@ Darth_GW: Most MMOs do not have a fully moddable map, etc. The problem with giving newbies a period of invulnerability, say, is that that period might very well be used to "grief" other players while the player is completely safe from repercussions. I.e: Start digging up the unclaimed public roads without anyone being able to knock the offender down, even.

I'm not saying that this problem can't be gotten around, but there is a general case, which we have seen several times while developing, that you want to avoid: Too much safety is very often exploitable for offensive purposes. When drying frames were indestructible, they were used to wall people into cabins, for example.

Pretty much the same reason the RoB is not a safe zone of any kind.

Perhaps what is needed is a safe newbie area - you can't enter it unless you are less than X hours old, or similar. You also could not login to it if more than that age, to stop one obvious abuse. Newbies could still grief each other, and if someone managed to get black skills while that young, they could kill other newbs, but that would be about it. Reincs would not be eligible unless their total playing time was below that special age. And it should probably have regularly respawning or better yet unchoppable trees, perhaps even regularly respawning farm plants (so there's always seed for newbs) etc. If a regular player got completely wiped out, they could create an alt and get seed there, but I don't see that as abusive.

Don't forget that you summon thieves at the RoB if they don't have a hearth fire.
