Permanent death

Postby Ford » Tue Aug 11, 2009 11:35 pm

My friend and I thought this game was great, and we played for days. Today we walked into a town and got called thieves and were ganked, and discovered that death was permanent; it felt bad man. I would like to play again but won't until this changes. I think it's pretty unreasonable to have permanent death in any MMO, especially one as laggy as this (no offense) where you could die and never have a chance to defend yourself. Also, the whole game is grinding- moreso than most other mmo's, so the time investment you lose is always going to be huge. When any idiot can and will walk up to someone and permanently kill them (the biggest grief possible in an MMO) the game ceases to be fun for anyone except the griefers. You might as well not even have crafting, instead just make it a 3rd person deathmatch game.

its never going to change

however... from speaking with the devs, death will apparently hurt less in the future as they shift focus of gameplay from single characters to entire bloodlines

ps. have you played any other rpgs with permadeath

You have my sympathy. When I started, killings were less common; I'd like to see the game go back to that kind of environment.

You _can_ save a lot of your investment - but at a price of slower LP gain - by moving the change/tradition slider towards tradition - many folks do that as they get more invested in their characters; you can also save LP in a claim.

If you hadn't done anything to any of those sliders - possible if fairly new - you can get half your LP back, and use them for a replacement character. It's not as good as getting it all back, and you'll still lose whatever was looted from your body, but it's better than nothing.

REMOVE CRAFTING? Alright, hear me out, I am listening to your griefing opinions and such, but this game is basically that noone is invincible. NOONE. In other MMO's, there's the bored mindset that you're always safe from other players, no matter what, blarblarblar. If you ever went to a PvP server on any game, you'd have the thrill of only trusting those who either; saved your hide, or you know in real life. Which is LIKE real frontiers. If there's no crime, there's no fun.

Now, Permanent Death is staying. I'm still on my first character and still ticking, although this may have something to do with migrating very quickly. I feel your pain with losing everything ever, but if there wasn't permanent death? It wouldn't add up in the town lore.

E.g. "Hey bob, Where's Jim?" "Oh he died a while back. He's coming back from the Ring though!" "Jolly good! So he'll be leading the war-charge against Reztopia?" "Right-o, Phillip."

So as you can see, there's no real pain for death, which you should have in a game where towns communicate and rely on every bit of manpower. This could lead to less of 'YEARGH! KEEP FIGHTING WE STILL HAVE OUR REZ BLARGH ARROW IN ME EYE! OH WELL OFF TO THE TOWN IDOL!'

Of course when the game becomes much more developed, the devs could maybe whip up different typed servers where there was full out PvP, No PvP, or mixed PvPvE.

But when you remove crafting from a town-building game, oho, there's gonna be rants.

Kholhaus, Don't call this guy's posts griefing! This really is a reasonable concern that will need to be addressed in one way or another. Grinding just to be killed off by some griefer using a macro is the epitome of online annoyance. I feel your pain. We've all but quit until there's a chance to play without fear of griefers. When the map reset comes, I'm sure we'll have this through distance and killer bears. Until then, all we can do is post the changes we think should be made on the forums and hope the devs will listen to us.

Do you know what town this was that accused you of thievery? It's very odd that this would happen... indeed, it's impossible to steal without having a high-level character.
Surprise.

I don't think the OP considers PvP to be fun.

In fact, I hear him saying that it's either a pvp deathmatch game [i]or[i] a building game - i.e. given the way he was PK'd, it's not really a building game.

Why do you all assume that anyone who does something you don't like also macros? What of the people who do stuff you like and who also macro? Or the griefers who grind by hand?
