The hunger system: Slightly broken?

Postby Bio » Wed Aug 12, 2009 5:18 am

Anyways, I was playing with some friends earlier, and I noticed that I was starved, so I went to the local apple tree. After ~7 minutes of eating apples, I was finally at full status. How many apples did I eat?

F*cking 70 apples. Who the hell can down 70 apples in 7 minutes? And he wasn't even overstuffed! It seems odd that apples give you so little. While at the 'very hungry' state, you can also eat around 10 steaks. A little off if I say so myself.

The proposal?

Well, this got me thinking about the hunger system in general. I love the realism the concept adds, but the implementation seems a little sketchy. 70 apples and not even overstuffed? Hmm. Anyways, other parts of the system are a bit funky. How about balancing the scale, so full and hungry are more balanced with starving and very hungry. Also, maybe make foods replenish a bit more? No matter how starved you are, eating 70 apples is just unrealistic.

Anyways, that's just my two cents on the idea. I really love the game you two have made. ~Bio

Well, yes. The food system is a bit sketchy, but seeing how this is alpha, you can't really blame them for any minor problems. I noticed this too but shrugged it off.

But now that I stop and take a look at it, it seems like filling your stomach is a mixture of quality, size, and whether it's raw or not.

So even if an apple is very big, it's still raw and poor quality food compared to bread or honeybuns.

If you ate a full loaf of bread you'd be VERY full, not overstuffed though. I know overstuffed, and it's not a comfortable place.
Assuming they went with quality when doing the food system, this can be forgiven, however it's just a Runescape clone--The food system that is-- if quality beats size.

We are well aware that the hunger system doesn't do what it's supposed to do. It's been slated for a fairly big overhaul, along with a bunch of other character stat related issues. The basic mechanics will most likely be left in, but they'll be tuned to more realistic values. Same thing with combat, for that matter.

I actually think the concept is a good idea though, because in higher states of the hunger meter, like hungry and full, you get alot more per apple or steak. So this motivates me to eat more often instead of waiting for it to get down..once it's down in the yellow i push it back to green.

I would like to point out another anomaly regarding the hunger system. If your stamina is at maximum and got overstuffed, the hunger level will not go down unless you perform stamina-draining activities.

The only problem in the current hunger system is that the "Full" status is only 10% of the entire bar. While starving is 50% and V. Hungry is 30%.

So unless you eat often you're almost always in the V. Hungry category.
