Mine support radius/materials

Postby Killface » Fri Jan 21, 2011 5:05 am

Its beginning to get a little crowded with a support every 5-6 tiles. I applaud the animation, and agree that they are a good idea, but currently to avoid a cave-in, there is a lot of overlap and overcrowding.
Some ideas include:

increasing the radius of safety to approach or mirror beehive radius
reducing the materials needed from 20 blocks 2 nuggets to 12 blocks 2 nuggets so that it can be constructed with one tree log

I'm fine with them as they are, but if you could change the green "Support Radius" circle to blocky squares to unambiguously tell which tiles are supported and which ones are not. Right now I'm not sure whether the "partially shaded" squares are safe to dig.

Then again, I can build so many supports it doesn't really matter.

I'd like to see something like a "mine pillar" that's more expensive to build but covers a huge area, to allow for open underground chambers where we can build our little dwarven fortresses.
Once a man has changed the relationship between himself and his environment, he cannot return to the blissful ignorance he left. Motion, of necessity, involves a change in perspective.

I think that would be the best solution. A second type of support that maybe needs steel or something but covers a bigger radius.
