Rare boss monsters

Postby Bio » Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:22 pm

Me and my buds were having a chat on Ventrilo, and a topic about boss monsters came up. The concept is that there are one of a kind monsters that you would be considered dimbass just encounter. A sketchy snippet of the convo. (I have bad memory)

"You could have like a T-rex or a dragon. And you'd get badass stuff if you killed them. Like dragon bones, or something. Or dragon scales. Or dragon sperm" (Yes, he actually said Dragon sperm)

Anyways, sinse the map is so sprawling, we could have about 3-5 boss monsters, with a slim chances of direct encounters. It sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Actually, I kind of like the idea of there being lairs or nests of horrible beasts out in the wilderness, something that towns could work together to destroy. They'd be good places for wilderness to radiate out from.
Surprise.

I'd only want them if it actually forced multiple towns to come together to fight it, due to how powerful it is. Also, make it make towns want to attack it. If a dragon would actually go around breathing fuck-you-firebreath onto crops and trees and buildings, it would definitely need to be stopped. If it was level XX but just sat in a cave hoarding treasures, it would be pretty meh.

I agree with sonerohi. Having monsters sitting around waiting to be attacked is boring. Having them drop something special makes them mere resources. Real monsters should pose a real threat to communities on the fringe of civilization. On the other hand, if there were a small chance that creatures in Mordor could spawn as a "dire" version, and drop a superior version of the normal drop, it'd make Mordor even more threatening and give people a reason to hunt out there besides LP.

Dire Cow Milk.

The most sought after of milks and most arduous to acquire.

Why not? Provided that dire cows are more like giant aurochs and their milk works like beer or wine or something, it kind of works from the mythological perspective.

Edit: Of course, you'd probably have to extract the milk from the corpse, or at least pummel the beast into submission.

Having dragons in the game would sort of make it like Monster Hunter.
If there were going to be dragons, or other boss monsters, they should be very large, maybe have its sprite be larger than a cabin.
It would be nice if some of them were hostile too, and if they don't drop aggro when you enter a cabin, and instead start to attack the cabin. :|

And of course special items that can be crafted from the remains.
..Just using dragons as an example
Dragon Hide/Scale Armor +xx Str, +xx Const
Dragon Helmet +xx Perc, + xx Int
Dragon Claw(Weapon)
Dragon Meat>Sausage forms and roasted

Also it could be skinned/butchered in multiple spots, to allow for better dividing of the spoils among the participating groups.
...I'm gonna stop there before I get into different types of bosses.

Heck, even if they were just something tougher than bears that forced you to fight in a way different than the normal stand stab shield, stand stab shield. Like a fat dragon that you could circle around to strike at it's tail. Or a minotaur that would run forward in a straight-ish line to gore you, and you could run aside.
