The reason I'm quitting

Postby Jimmybob » Sun Jan 30, 2011 9:20 am

I gotta admit this game is really fucking addicting, I don't wanna sound like that other guy that played for 8 hours and whined because he died, but the death system is quite harsh. I woke up this morning and played 12 hours straight, most of that time grinding buckets, and spent around 100,000 LP on just skills, then I died and lost most of it (My beliefs were set on more LP but less recovery if you die) and I quit.
I'm not putting down the game or it's creators I'm just critiquing it because the death is very harsh, and in the future when this game is a big hit (which I'm sure it'll reach some day soon) you'll have a lot of people ragequit from dying. The combat system is pretty whack, I know you're trying to be unique and all but it's pretty bad. Just copy something else.

Everything else about the game is perfect, the only 2 major things I see wrong are death and PvE (Haven't experienced PvP). I myself am a Java developer so I point out flaws in games easily. I really look deep into what new players will experience in games I create, and try to make it balanced and what not.

I could ramble on about the good and bad parts of the game but I'm just gonna leave now, I'm sure someone's going to be a smart ass and flame me about this post. I just wanted to inform the developers that PvE and death is really unbalanced.

1 more thing though, even if this game is in Alpha stage, you should really think about making it easier to start and do things, because new players that don't use the Wiki or search function on the forums will get NOWHERE and no game should be like that.

So yeah, bye. Thanks for the 2 great days I had here, if I wouldn't have died I probably would have wasted another week being addicted just to lead to dying later and having even worse of a fml moment.

Oh, you definitely will attract the smartasses with this thread. My pre-emptive advice will be to not stick around and argue with them.

At the end of the day, I think this is how the developers want the death system. Whether it's good or bad has always been a fruitless debate, but I'm sure they're already well aware that it doesn't appeal to everyone and another thread is not going to convince them to change their minds.

I didn't know you, but take care. :]

Perma death is a very unique game feature one that in my opinion is going out of style I for one enjoy having to remake a character after it dies. So too each his own go along your way and stop crying

It would have proven your point much better and also proven you really do understand how to fight people and not only how to slaughter helpless sheep.

Yes it is harsh, it simply is not everyone's cup of tea. Yes, many more will rage-quit and the game will therefore not be for them either. There are however enough of us that like it just the way it is. And remember, you had a choice when you did your belief sliders, you didn't have to go full change, you consciously made that choice and took on that risk, not the game's fault. The game catered for an alternative.

The combat system takes a lot of practise, it is complex. There is no way, if you had started playing recently you can comment on it in depth. You first impression might be that it's whack, but it's not, it's sophisticated, it's somewhat unique, it's not bad at all. You have not even gotten to PvP yet...

No, you are not pointing out flaws, you are pointing out that many things in this game are not main stream and we already know that, it was purposefully designed this way... these are not flaws, these are features.

Yes, some will probably flame you. There are some imbalances, for sure, the game is under development, but the specific ones you take out as example, are actually quite cool and had you spent more time learning how to play the game, you would likely have found the ways to hedge against your own death, the game caters for that. I have only died once since I've started playing, many have never and many have plenty of times. you live, die... and you learn.

Yes, there should be an ingame beginner's tutorial, we actually all agree on this point.

2 days!? Seriously, you have not even scratched the surface in 2 days... you may be doing yourself in by quitting this soon. However, it does not sound like this is the type of game for you (no flame, honest opinion).

Good luck.

permadeath is an intereting concept. i for one think its great. i died today when some fucktards i lived with killed me, but i said "fuck yea, new oportunties!" now i live near that charterstone village...the one with the really confusing name :geek: ...anyways, i live with new people and new places to explore. this isnt runescape (yes, i said it) where you died and lose your stuff, this is H&H where you actually DIE.

I died 2 times, and i consider commiting suicide...

First time i died, i was owned by a bear while trying to find food.
Second time i drowned because i didn't know that swimming required an huge constitution value.
Third time... Well, i have no food and i am about to starve.

Hell, i'm a new player, fuck if i die, it's fun as hell, i'm playing with some friends and go mumble with them, and when the bear attacked, i just screamed things like: "OH GOD, THE INHUMANITY" into my microphone, and we had fun.
Also, it was fun to drown. Suddenly, i just went under, while my friend was at the shoreline watching. Fun times.

It's like Dwarf Fortress, really, to have fun playing this, you have to sit down and learn it, and you have to be able to see the fun in dying. And it IS fun dying, eventhough you loose a shitton of everything.

The combat system is hard to learn, but it's actually okay when you get it. I haven't tried PvP either, but i try fighting ants, and having fun getting my ass kicked.
