Studying equipment instead of buying skills

Postby DeadlyPencil » Sun May 22, 2011 6:53 pm

This is basically the idea:

Equipment would have to be studied before they can be equipped and used. They would be studied in the same window as curiosities & take INT to study. Most skills would not exist anymore (or maybe they all could be replaced)

Example #1
You make a bone saw, but in order to equip it to make boards, you need to place it into the study window and let it study for a period of time. once that is done you can equip it. You would no longer need to buy carpentry to see items you can make, you simply need the pre-requested discoveries, but you need to study a saw first to even get the board discovery.

Example #2:
You purchase a 12th bay axe from a village, you start studying it. After your finished you can equip the axe and now have the attacks: cleave and chop. you no longer buy melee combat skills, you simply study equipment.

I think this method is in line with what they were trying to do with discoveries. Instead of requiring experience, you are simply forgoing exp in order to use something new. For higher tier equipment, you can make the INT and study time much longer. so for example a law speaker hat would take a very long time and take a lot of INT. This would also give the hat a purpose.

Studying equipment for all the attacks seem a bit off.
Combat will change entirely.

I like the idea overall, but the whole mentory window needs some updating, for one you should be able to equip something similar to a backpack to expand that bitch a little.

edit: Three posts down there is a ninja.

well just think of studing the weapon as practicing with it....

Items that give skills would be for them to decide, but it could simply be stuff like this:
spruce hat? Tresspass
Bandit mask? Theft
sledgehammer? Vandalizm
Necro cloak? Murder

with study and INT times modified so its harder at each step

yeah and you need theft to make bandit mask. obviously he's suggesting changing that. rest of it is up to devs.

you no longer need any skills to make a necro cloak. but in order to wear it, you have to study it and after studying it you also get murder or they pick a different item to study for murder, up to them. So for example you make the necro cloak take take 72 hours and 30 INT to study. that means that anyone trying to get murder will have to either wait a really long time until it no longer affects their studying, or forgo exp to get it quicker.
