Item Stacking

Postby Gaiadin » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:40 am

As a hunter/explorer I find myself having to set a hearth and return to my village every other boar that I kill because there is so much to carry and so little space, even with a backpack.

If certain items, such as branches, meat, bones, etc... were able to stack in one slot, maybe to a maximum of 5 or 10, it would allow us to make fewer trips between our village and our explorations.
It would also cut down on the insane number of urns and other containers required to store such objects.

This would also solve some inventory paradoxes like how arrows take up the same space as the quiver

arrows might be a balance issue - if you could stack a bunch you wouldnt need a quiver

might not hurt to have it stack in fives or tens, though

Except for the fact you can't shoot without a quiver.

Maybe so, but making it so would solve that issue. Also, stacks of different objects could have limits to reflect both realism and balance. Arrow stacks could be limited to five, 6 stacks wouldn't equal a quiver, giving them function but making arrow crafting and management significantly easier. A stack limit of 5 would also reflect the difficulty of manageing such stacks without a container while balancing other objects without damage. Dexterity (now that it is functional) might affect stack limits. increasing certain types of stacks by 1-3 every 10 points or so (just throwing it out there as an example...of course balance and realism might reflect an entirely different calculation and would probabaly be item dependant).

As it is the inventory is rather unrealistic and a bit imbalanced. I can carry 12 wooden blocks (1/28th of a tree) but not more than a pound of seeds. More container items would be practical along these lines. Seed sacks (obvious). Crop baskets, an item that you can equip like a backpack but essentially just gives harvested crops higher stack limits.

Now, with the quality system in place this can make interface extremely complicated discerning between items. A 'stack window' could be opened when right clicking on the stack. This or something similar. As it is window management is a bit of a pain and at times gets to be an excessively PIA. Solving that issue would obviously be client sided and another thread but I felt it worth mentioning so I didn't get flak for not considering the obvious.

a whole boar worth of skin + meat + intestines is quite a bit you know... the ability to fit it all into the backpack is something of an anomaly.

In general I can get about 3/4 boars worth of meat and guts in my pack per hunting trip.

I do find my constant return trips to be a little irritating though, and I don't even bother trying to lug the hides around.
