Just an idea i had last night :P (before i start i want to warn you : bad grammar)
this would make it possible to send stuff over long distances and also leave messages to offline player.
to send letters and packages you need to know the hearth secret which now work as an address. (sending stuff to player on your kin list also works)
"???" in the address field will send the letter to a random player.


Mailbox

4 Boards + 2 Sticks (Capacity 3 Letters also holds food and water for the pigeon)

Carrier Pigeon

Chicken + 1 Nugget of any common metal +1 beautiful dream

Letter

Parchment + 1 String + 0.1l Ink (only text)

Package

4 Parchment +2 String + 0.1l Ink (text + 1 Item maximum 2x2 size)

The mailbox must be placed on your claim in order to work
As soon as the letter is placed on the tile below the pigeon the delivery starts and the pigeon flys towards the mailbox it is being sent to at the speed of 3 tiles per second (q10 pigeon)
Delivery speed is affected by the pigeons quality and the food. {sqrt[Pidgeon Quality/10]*(sqrt[( FodderQ + WaterQ/2)*1.65]}/2
Pigeons are visible to other players however they're too fast to be followed for a long time (how about a flying target and some scents? ) :D



If the mailbox is full newer letters and packages will be dropped on the ground and disappear after time.

How about when a message is delievered, the pidgeon box empties as well as the letter being sent, and a bird flys towrds the mailbox it is being sent to. Something like base speed is about 3 tiles per second. And speed with quality is determined by something like Base + {sqrt[Pidgeon Quality/10]*(sqrt[( FodderQ + WaterQ/2)*1.65]}/2

Don't really like the package Idea though.

Carrier pigeons would be pretty awesome. If you've kinned someone I think it should be possible to send them mail without having to know their hearth secret as well.

I'm also not so certain about item delivery, maybe only specific lightweight things. Even though they are the same size, it makes more sense for a pigeon to deliver a bluebell than steel armor for example.

I've seen this idea a couple of times, but never as fleshed out as this. Great job! Might want the 'mailbox' to look more like a pigeon coop or rookery, though. Depending on how abstract from the real thing you want to get, you can just do it the way you described with getting pigeons or make it closer to reality and you have to exchange pigeons on a regular basis (because pigeons will only seek out their home nest).

I think speed should just be set at a distance/min at something faster than sprint. If there's going to be an actual bird, it should be able to be shot down, too. (Also previously mentioned.)

As far as packages... I can just see a pigeon eating a bit of food sent in a package. :lol:

Agree. Heck, if you just know the character name, you should be able to send one. Of course, you'd only know a character's name if you kinned them or someone told you. Also, if there was more than one of the same name (it is possible because names are only unique to the account), the pigeon went to a random person instead. Might add too many complications, though.

but then you can easily follow the pigeon and it will reveal the location of that person :o

That's a risk you take, however, since it moves faster than sprint, we'll see how long you can follow it.

I'd like to see someone just follow it over rivers, lakes, thickets and whatnot.

Back to the "How much do we want to abstract from realism" issue....

Messenger birds hardly ever fly in a straight line towards home. They have been known to double back on their path at times, too. This could be very easily implemented in the game, and then you add this:

Here are some of my critiques.

First off I would not want the mail box, seems too modern, I say instead something like a pigeon post instead.

Second I feel this should be village only because when I think of letters in the past it usually is more from rich or royalty and I feel that fits more in a village setting than a hermit.

Third the letter should be parchment + wax + .1L ink, just because I get the image of the wax stamp sealing the letters rather than string. Unless you want it to be a letter scroll or something then the string would work.

The package idea I am not fond of, seems too out of it. Could instead have the pigeon send a 1x1 item so either the letter or 1x1 item.

Lastly the chicken + nugget seems too strange. Could have J&L implement small birds and some kind of catching net to get one. Or make it Chicken + wonderful dream + etc, because a nugget I cannot comprehend how that would make a chicken be able to fly and get lighter. Could also include a upgrade for the pigeon into maybe a falcon using a gold nugget couple of dreams and goldbeater skin.
