Fish

Postby ArPharazon » Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:44 am

Currently all the fish we can get are 10q perches. How come? This has not changed since I started playing, and to be honest screams "placeholder". Where are the fish cakes and fried fish? Where are the fish qualities? Where are the nets (which require swimming to use and hence provide a payoff for the danger)? Where are the different kinds of fish? Bait to increase chances of some fish kinds, quality, rate and other things (maybe combine hook and bait into kinds of "tackle" which use worms/flies/bread/veggies and/or feathers/flowers and/or metals for hook)?

Especially if you add boats, fishing will be even more blatantly unfinished. I think a good way to handle it will be overlaying a few distribution maps for each kind of fish on the map which are used when you fish. Also, have fish quality be affected by fishing rod/net/bait and water quality.

It's just weird that fish are given so little attention, especially given the prominence of fishing in actual Scandinavian settings.

at least fish level dependent on the quality of the water... and not only one more FEP after q50+ like its with others... fish is so healthy :!:

You've said yourself that its obviously a placeholder. Would you rather J&L work on giving us several new varieties of fish, or on getting the new monsters in, boats, etc. etc. etc.?

My problem is that it's been a placeholder for ages.

A new fish or two, or at least quality doesn't sound like it would take much work so yes, I would like them to add those before boats and monsters. As for the other stuff I mentioned, obviously I'm cool with all of that being waaay at the bottom of the list.

My char has 40 int and 10 of every other stat. This suggests fishing is falling flat even as a placeholder.

Unless "getting something random from fishing" is particularly complex (it might be), there are two perfectly viable improvements that could be made with minimal dev effort:
  • Add different fish which yield different stats
  • Have Perch yield a spread of stats as "newbie food". Newbie food would give you a blah mix of stats, whereas higher 'tech' foods would provide targetted stats.

In the more longterm, I'd love to see local variation in clay/fish quality. If a tile's x coordinate ends in 0-4 it gets +5 QL, and 5-9 gets -5 QL. Same with Y coord. This produces a "checkerboard" variance to QL, and would be a quick bare minimum way of producing localized quality variance. It' be desireable to develop a more "random"-seeming pattern than my suggestion, which used the actual coordinate system (which I assume isn't tile-based.)

I can at least tell you that Jorb's drawn more types of fish ages ago,
but I can't tell you why they haven't implemented them yet, or when.

Increases the chance of success of certain instance attack(s). (opportunity knock, needs confirmation)

Affects detection of scents by others. (Currently Broken)

This is directly from the Wiki, but I have no idea how reliable this information is.
