New containers that require no metal?

Postby CG62 » Mon Sep 28, 2009 10:14 pm

Jesus christ, this whole metal shortage is making me look like a newb with all these wicker baskets strewn about. I'd build straw ones but I've got more important uses for the straw from my wheat, and like I said; no metal.

So, can we PLEASE have the ability to make something out of boards like a crate? I imagine the graphic would be similar to the winerack, only without the slots in the side (obviously). And crates are generally large. So, 5x5 storage space, 5-10 boards to build?

I've been thinking that we need shelves- something that, while it has as much space as a chest, takes up more floorspace as well, and can't be moved while holding any items.

I like the crate idea too. You'd expect to see a crate when shipping things, so I'd say go ahead and make them the same size as chests, with a somewhat larger footprint.

Then, make chests lockable. Seriously, dude. We have lockpicks- they're called pickaxes.

@Sabinati: Every single suggestion I have read today, you have the first post, and in every SINGLE one you call it crap. If you don't like suggestions so much, why are you reading them?
Surprise.

shelves would be cool

i actually like the crate idea too, but only in the context of shipping things. i'd say make them even larger than chests, but really suitable for single use for packing a large quantity of goods to a destination. possibly opening the crate would allow you to remove the stuff but then put it in a state of "this crate is too damaged to be used", and it would require repair to be used again.

agreed

Would definitely like to see larger containers that don't require metal.

If the material-per-slot ratio is worse on the larger container, fine.
If the floorspace-per-slot ratio is worse, fine.
If the large container is subdivided into oddly-shaped compartments, even that would be alright.

the important thing you have to consider is that large storage containers are valuable, so it's a balance issue. you may notice that the storage space of containers scales with the relative difficulty in obtaining the materials/skills to make them, and it should be this way.

True, but what if we add a new axis to this... that is, other than expense and size of a storage item, the security of that item. So, a basket is cheap, but also tiny and can be opened by anyone. A chest is expensive, large, and can be locked- and is also very difficult to open. The place that a crate would fit in would be as a moderately expensive item (several boards being easy for some to get, but a limited resource), somewhat large (perhaps as large as a chest), and finally insecure and relatively fragile. As we all know, it only takes one or two crowbar hits to obliterate any crate.
Surprise.

Heh, I joined a village with plentiful metal about an hour after posting this. I currently have three chests in my house.

But yeah, the security sounds pretty good, but the relative lack of thieves (as compared to the old map) dulls this idea a bit.
