Free short jumps - intended or abuse?

Postby Potjeh » Tue Sep 29, 2009 10:09 am

Travelling very short distances (two screens or so) costs 0 TW. This means that with enough crossroads around a village, you'd never have to walk again. I'm not sure this is the intended use of the crossroads, and I suspect it might get fixed (if you do, a minimum of TW for any jump would be a good way to do it). We mostly plan to use this to cross the rivers in our delta, but also to avoid opening our gates unless we're driving carts. In fact, if you forfeit cart accessibility, you could build gateless walls.

Anyway, I'm wondering what's the dev attitude on this short-range travel. Please tell us if you intend to fix this, because it'd alter our building plan.

I doubt there would be such dedicated person to build Village Flags in a path-wise fashion.

We noticed this as well. However, if you use a crossroads to make a jump that shows a 0% TW cost, and you do not currently have the TW debuff, you gain it after the jump. This suggests that, while the cost is displayed as 0%, it is most likely a fraction of a percent, thus still giving you weariness.

I personally think the idea of near-infinite travel just around your village for menial tasks is great.

It was actually unintended (though foreseen). I plan to remedy it by introducing a static base cost (say 1%-5% or so) to all travels.

Well, I can port to another reasonably distant village for just 4% TW, so I think it'd be reasonable to have the static cost lower than that. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you won't be disabling travel within a village.

You don't HAVE to do it though.

I'm in favor of higher minimum cost. Travel should be discouraged when it's not that far to just walk... Encounters with travelers people!
