Books

Seriously, we need to be able to make books/notepads.
What I mean is like 20 sheets made from dried skin and 4 strings, together bringing 36 page book/notepad, which you can write stuff in, however only with a feather pen and ink.

What's so good with this? Well, now you can keep a record on what people have done! Keep a record of how much someone have eaten from the food store, how much someone have taken from the metal chest! Also, keep all your locations of QL1023 water and QL1643 clay in a cool place. Or maybe keep your secret H&H dreams in it.

Oh yeah! Imagine the possibility to draw maps in them too, so we can have a MAPBOOK!!

Of course devs won't get pleased without a picture. So here is one. Jorb inspired me when drawing the first mountain.

Parchements and Runestones

Postby Peter » Mon Oct 05, 2009 12:48 am

Am I the only one who would like to see our favorite mutant text documents improved? I would like it if we could leave more text and more complex images.

In particular, I was thinking that if each parchment and runestone consisted of a 40x40 character grid, and a full ASCII font was used, then more complex messages and even images could be sent. Even multiple lines would be nice, but I think that allowing someone to include not just a short paragraph but also a simple diagram would be a great addition for relatively little work.
Surprise.

I agree. The main problem is, again, that I'll have to delve deeper into Java's text rendering APIs, and I haven't found the resolve to do so yet.

ability to knit parchments into a book... do i need explain it more throughtly?

books would have several uses, like adding stories into game by players, keeping track of what you have done (journal), notes about trades, overall tutorial book sold to newbies for 5 branches or rocks.

Books also could hold maps, making atlases.

So... does this idea sound like good or bad?

Text Windows on Parchment, Runestones and Bubblechat.

Postby Nogetsu » Fri Dec 04, 2009 12:57 am

In creating the Tutors Walkthrough at Novigard. I discovered that the amount of info is too much for just one Runestone, which in truth I expected. But with somethings its not that its too much its that the text window is just not big enough. When you write on them you reach a certain point and then you must be sure of your spelling and grammar as the text continues on beyond the visible window. This happens with the Parchments as well which can be annoying if you wish to leave a message for someone...

The Bubblechat is that which is used in the top left corner, it has a set amount of characters allowed and then it stops, causing you to enter that which is written and then write the next to be added after the person you are talking to via that system has read it...

With the Runestones and Parchment. I ask for both bigger text windows, and the ability to drop down a line so that you may type in a small area instead of a long stretch that causes the reader drag the text across the screens.

With the Bubblechat, I suggest that when a new chat is added, that the last entered chat message is pushed upwards instead of the new message overriding it. I am rush so this might not be all that clear. Will explain later when I get back from work..

I have, naturally, been aware of these problems for quite some time. As I've mentioned elsewhere in the forums, the client is in dire need of generally better text rendering capabilities for this reason and many others. What is blocking it is the fact that there's quite a bit of work involved in trying to comprehend Java's text rendering libraries.

Reading documentation on strings sucks. I think it's a problem with all programing languages.

Books

Add books.

1. Notes have to not suck. A string of text (as is the current method) is a bad idea. I'm thinking notes should be more like ye olde HTML pre tag. That is a textarea where you can use spacebar to pad things out and very simply format a page of text. If you want to go fancy, we can choose from a range of fonts. A large textarea you can type and format things in, then preview and if happy, "publish" which saves the note. When you open notes, instead of getting a string of text, you get a 'page' IE: An actual note.

Bonus Option: Ability to freehand draw on a note, thus allowing people to include drawn images. Possibly of cocks.

2. Bookpress. Create a new bookpress item (akin to a wine press in that it's a thing that sits somewhere). Simply make a couple of pages of notes (as many as desired). Grab some pieces of leather for the cover. Right-click Bookpress, enter the Book's title and combine pages and leather into a bound book. Written Books can be copied onto blank books. So 2 new tasks, 'Bind Book' (as just explained) and 'Copy Book'. Copy Book requires one blank book and one written book.

3. Books. Hovering over it shows you the title of the book. Right-click and open brings up a book interface. 2 pages on screen at a time. Clicking the slightly up-turned corners in the bottom left or right turns the page forward or backward.

Why? WHY THE FUCK NOT THAT'S WHY. TAKE YOUR GODDAMNED WHY AND SHOVE IT.
