I've written about it elsewhere, but my plan to remedy this problem comprises the following steps:
1. Implement wax seals. I'm not sure just how wax seals should work, however, which is the greatest blocker right now. Somehow, anyway, it should be possible to apply a seal to parchments (and maybe wine bottles and other things) using a piece of wax and a seal stamp. (Note that this would also make bank notes possible)
2. Require a seal stamp as an input when building a coin press.
3. Now, coins minted in coin presses will have the mark of that seal stamp.
4. That way, the larger groups of people could create and regulate their own currencies, and demand them in payment for services or goods. Currency regulation would likely include ensuring that coins are minted of metals in a narrow quality band. It would be reasonable to assume that the best regulated currencies will "win".
I would also like to extend the usage of such coins to be usable in semi-automatic "vending stands". It is less clear exactly how those would work, however, but Jorb and I have been thinking both of such vending stands and a kind of "barter stand".
