Coins

Ok, after reading another thread on coin quality etc, i realised that coins shouldnt have a quality.

If we are aiming for a tier system in coin value (for instance, copper, silver, gold) then quality will completely brick this.
i propose that the way coins work be, when a bar or nugget is turned into coins the coins have no Q. essentially this allows HIGH Q metals to be used for things that you want to be of a HIGH QUALITY. This ofcourse also allows low quality ore to be produced into coins and put into circulation.

anyone else want to elaborate on this?

Erm. OK... so what happens when you turn said no-Q coins back into bars of metal? It's not that people are likely to do this once enough people accept coins as a currency, but their utility is still something that fundamentally underpins their value. Removing Q on coins would be pretty senseless for this reason IMOHO.

Also, who is to say we are aiming for a tier system in coin value of gold/silver/copper etc? There is no central bank or giant state managing these things, nor is there likely to ever be one. People are basically bartering when they use coins, and the value is something they take into account.

I agree to an extent... but remember that the main attraction of coins is that they can eventually be turned back into bars. They would need a way for each coin to have the same value, without making that value too low.

How about a minimum Q for bars that can be made into coins? Say, 100. All coins end up that Q. There might be a big advantage about having coins is that you'll eventually get Q100 bars back out, regardless of skill. Or something.
Surprise.

I've written about it elsewhere, but my plan to remedy this problem comprises the following steps:
1. Implement wax seals. I'm not sure just how wax seals should work, however, which is the greatest blocker right now. Somehow, anyway, it should be possible to apply a seal to parchments (and maybe wine bottles and other things) using a piece of wax and a seal stamp. (Note that this would also make bank notes possible)
2. Require a seal stamp as an input when building a coin press.
3. Now, coins minted in coin presses will have the mark of that seal stamp.
4. That way, the larger groups of people could create and regulate their own currencies, and demand them in payment for services or goods. Currency regulation would likely include ensuring that coins are minted of metals in a narrow quality band. It would be reasonable to assume that the best regulated currencies will "win".

I would also like to extend the usage of such coins to be usable in semi-automatic "vending stands". It is less clear exactly how those would work, however, but Jorb and I have been thinking both of such vending stands and a kind of "barter stand".

Ohh, can we have full-auto stands? maybe even Gatling stands and armor-piercing stands? Let's not forget submachine stands.
Surprise.
