Huh! No wonder I've been stuck at 100,000 LP for three months! No wonder I have only 20 in each stat and haven't leveled any of them up in a month!
Now I just need to make the exact same character as everyone else and play that exact same game.
I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the suggestion, just the game itself. Now, back to the matter at hand:
On the realism side, human beings are the best endurance traveling creatures on the planet; beyond thinking ahead and carrying water and food, we are simply better able to travel long distance.
The main form of hunting for humans is to simply walk after antelopes until they collapse from exhaustion, then drop a rock on them. From the perspective of pretty much all other animals, humans are the terminator.
Only dogs are really on par with humans in general environments, which may be why they where tamed.

Skills need to be improved by doing them, or at least, doing something related. At the moment, its all about the hunter/fighter, and how many bears you can kill. I would rather see such people become damn good at fighting, and maybe butchering (as they would do a lot of that), but little else. No reason why they should be good at sewing, or smithing, or carp, if they have never sewed before, or smithed, or carped.
This is my main gripe with the game now, as it stands. Boats would be great, but they aren't a fundamental mechanic. This stuff, however, deeply affects a persons play style. It's exactly like you say, the best players are all the best for the same reason, they can take down the beasties for the max LP. I _love_ the Q system, but combined with the LP system, it sucks... big time.
