Just thought I'd put this out there. When you're getting into a boat, it says "Avast!", which in English means "Stop!" or "Halt!" xD

Correct, however it's used in a common pirate phrase.

"Avast ye scurvy dogs! Set sail for the high seas!"

Avast in piratese has many many many reasons. It's a hail, a fare well, a grunt, a curse, a celebration a battle cry. All pirate words are interchangeable. Comprehension is for the sober!
