Item tracking

Perform some action on an item and you get an object similar to a scent bound to that item.

Maybe allow the holder of the scent to teleport to the item if it's a long way off, or if he conducts an expensive ritual.

E.G. Brodgar wants to have a public couldron. The chieftan gets a scent to it which he keeps in his hut / on his person, and leaves it in the communal work cabin. Honest John (an alt member of the village) picks it up and walks it off the village authority radius, so Joe StealTooth (the main) picks it up and teleports it to his home out in whoop whoop without leaving a scent.

Chieftan wakes up, grabs his sword and his scent, teleports to his couldron. If Joe is about he gets an ass kicking, if he's not, the chieftan just picks up the couldron and travels back to his hearth.

Maybe this could be said to disadvantage thieves a lot, but the ability to teleport for ever and a day with carryables has given them a pretty long reach anyway, maybe it's time to swing the pendulum?

With that there should also be a long and back breaking "scrub down" action to remove said scent for fairness, but I totally agree with this.

edit: The "scrub down" function would also damage the item slightly and remove some quality points depending on your dexterity and stealth skill.

Should there? If you allow characters to negate the possibility of tracking then what is the point of allowing tracking?

Perhaps by "long" you mean several real life days, in which case I think stench decay mechanic would suit it better than forcing the thief to grind away
