Viewing the contents of containers.

Maybe while holding shift and mousing over a chest will show a pop-up of its contents, but you can only do it if you would normally be able to open the container without trespassing etc.

Actually, this should be a replacement to theft. You can see whats inside the container, without leaving a scent.
If you choose to open it, a "Smell of Snooping" should be left, if you take something, a theft scent would be left.
The reason you'd have to open it, is you shouldn't see what quality the items are.

From what I hear, they plan to change simply looking inside a container to leaving Trespassing scents instead of Theft.

but what do you guys think of the idea? you could quickly scan through your chests to find items and organize stuff

I like it. It would be a lot easier than short running bursts to try to get the right angle to get at a chest in a cabin.

It wouldn't make sense for you to be able to see inside without opening it (regarding the theft aspect).
Come back two hours earlier.
