You should not be able to claim the RoB with either claims or village claims, as it is there is no way what so ever to remove village claims without a dev and any item left on the RoB now has to be stolen.
The RoB should just be a no claim zone.

I understand that this is slightly different to claims as claims prevent movement without leaving a scent, but I believe the same rules should apply to villages.

Yeah, there's two problems here:
-Brogdar shouldn't be able to own everything newbs drop.
-You shouldn't have to drop things to trade, you should HAVE A TRADE INTERFACE.
-Should be possibe to unclaim things from villages.

My understanding is that the ring of brodgar as a central teleportation spot is on the way out.

I do also agree with the idea of a direct person to person trade interface, and with the idea of letting people pick up stuff they've dropped on a village claim without making a crime stench
