White flags.

I believe this game should have white flags, in game. I realize that we have forums for discussing things without fear of (instant) retaliation, but on more than one occasion I've found a small village, decided to explore it, and been dispatched violently from its premises. I propose this; make a white flag and make it a two handed item with no function. Graphically it should be easily noticable on the character. I realize that not everyone is exactly... sportsman-like, and that some players upon seeing an unarmed and obviously disinclined to combat. I'm not exactly big on enforcing morality, so rather than a De-buff to the attacker, I suggest a buff to the victim. If attacked by a player while wielding a white flag, that player is automatically put into run regardless of tile type. Additionally they recieve a (slight) reduction in stamina cost for running.

That said, this obviously isn't a critical suggestion, just something to add an extra layer of depth to combat.

Spend some more time thinking about it...

Think about why people don't want you on their property to being with.
If you cant figure it out, it starts with "fuckin" and ends with "thieves/griefers".

Your suggestion would be awesome for the thieves.

Maybe just stop "exploring" someone else's private property?

I don't have the trespassing skill. These properties were by no means private. You do have a valid counterpoint on theives though. There is a potential for abuse there. Though, there is still nothing stopping you from killing the theif. It's not as if they cannot be attacked with a white flag equipped. It just shows graphically that the character is unarmed. I'll let the concept stand for alittle longer before admitting I'm full of shit.

White flag or not, if someone walks onto my property uninvited I am going to be very suspicious of their motive and keep an eye on them until they leave. So I don't see what the point would be of implementing a white flag for other than looks.

Is it really unusual for people to explore and investigate towns and whatnot? I've been looking for places to trade around where I've settled so I can get access to metals and new crops. If what I've been doing is bad form, I appologize to those I've wronged. I was just thinking after being chased off at arrow point yet again, that it would be nice to let townspeople know I mean no harm and am just looking for someone to talk to. Thinking about it, I should probably just go in their town naked huh. Let's see them mess with me then.

There's a certain exploring etiquette. You need to greet a resident while standing outside of the town and ask permission to enter. While you're inside, you have to stay in sight and away from containers, crucibles and stuff like that. If you don't get permission to enter, then don't, and if nobody is home don't enter either.

I've done a lot of exploring following these simple rules, and I never had to run from arrows.

That is good advice actually. I guess I'm a bit socially retarded or something. I'm not really used to theiving being such a concern. I'll try this on the next township I find and let you know how it turns out.

Bumping this thread instead of making a new one. It'd be nice to have a bunch of colored flags with no defined purpose to carry around. Nothing complex, just the basic, red, blue, black, white etc color choices and allow players to create meanings for each color. Obviously white would be used to signal neutrality, but the other ones would be up for grabs.

Seems the problem with the social aspects of the game is there isn't much culture for us to build around certain objects, flags, and buildings when pretty much everyone has the same thing that doesn't really represent an idea or a purpose.
