Structure Foundations

This ground "must be level?" I don't think so (well yes, but no)!

To combat the troublesome Z-axis, there should be a smoother mechanic to flatten ground for structures, other than what we had previously glimpsed in Salem.

This below image helps to demonstrate the following suggestion.

Image

Players should be able to lay a three-dimensional foundation as the base for their construction projects.

In this mock-up, a player lays the foundation in stone—but not in the typical way. The foundation this player lays is three-dimensional, and it brings the elevation of the construction area to that of the natural elevation (natural elevation which is highest and nearest the foundation).

Image

With the foundation finished, it gets exciting, a player can now treat that land as any other stone-layed area—perhaps even to create his or her own custom structure (see references @ bottom).

It so happens the player prepared this area to fit a straw mansion.

I like that in general but the resources and effort required for that should be balanced (so there should be considerations on the ideal place to build structures or layout a settlement).

Yes please, some sort of streamlined way of building foundations would be a godsend. Spending days leveling ground with, frankly, inadequate tools was miserable.

Im not opposed to foundations but I would love it to be more organic like what people would actually do. If they wanted a house on a hill they simply adjusted the structure to fit more than a foundation. This is a good step towards that however. :)

Yes please. Leveling the ground was one of the worst things about Salem.

Which is why the new map generator creates much larger level areas. :)

I meant the new mapgen in Salem. Hafen doesn't have a mapgen yet.

By the sounds of that you're still going to make us spend 4+ hours leveling just to put down a house. orz

Frankly, I don't understand the point of there being a z-axis in Salem (or in Hafen, for that matter). I guess it can make things a bit prettier, but if you're going to have large flat areas all around you lose that. And I can't really see any other benefit, because elevation doesn't influence anything. The closest that comes to it is cliffs, but then again you have cliffs in Haven without a z-axis.
