Or take less than three years to chop up.

It'd actually be nice if they decayed over time on their own and if trees just naturally regrew over time. I've always wanted the world to sort of heal itself and fade away a lot of human scarring. Leave cryptic things, of course, like rune stones and the occasional wall segments and buildings that have become overrun with vines and grass and no longer serve their intended purposes (such as the wall is now easy to break even with 10 str by hand and objects decay in the house).

The permanence of every player action mars things quite a bit.

once upon a time, they experimented with having trees regrow in empty areas - this had some side effects such as trees growing in strange places and lots of them becoming stunted, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times

personally, i'd like to see unclaimed paving decay slowly over time

I remember this, it was mostly annoying because they sprouted Everywhere there was grass. Most of my tree farm was stunted and there were sprouts in the worst places possible. It could probably be done much better than that and if we had the capacity to remove saplings then it wouldn't have been a problem, just annoying.

Unclaimed decaying pavement does sound good becuase a lot of time you find very old places that have pavement still there... either on some annoying place or on mountains and such... I think I know how you feel. :P

No thank you I quite like stumps. Now I do think we should be able to plant base quality cones or tree seeds right back int eh dirt to regrow the same quality tree. That way we can separate regenerating the forest and trees grown for quality.

As for the decaying pavement, I like the idea. :)

I quite like the odd stump too, I at least like that I am able to choose whether to leave them or not, but am all for your idea V of planting base q directly back into the ground, that would be perfect for regenerating huge empty spaces left by fallen villages.

Pavement should decay but it takes an awfully long time, it would be nice to see old pavement with cracks in it and natural terrain showing through though.
What I would really love is for decaying brick walls to be easily removable, you should be able to just 'kick' them over. :D
