Canals for Hafen (Happy Bday Painhertz)

I know this has been suggested over and over again, but I never really found a thread that captured my idea of a canal.

As we all know, boating it a fast means of travel, and also a potentialy effective means of item transport.

We also know that Haven 2 will have no HS and Fast Travel, so how's about we implement Canals and different varieties of boats to go with it?

PROs:
Fast and efficient travel from one point to another.
Easy means of transporting merchandise from merchant to consumers.
Can't be built longer then 7 tiles, allowing even fresh alts to swim it.
Can't be built, or have structures built within 3 tiles of it.

CONs:
Can be clogged with just about anything.
Slowly corrodes away, requires constant maintenance.
Some scrub is gonna bug a moat...
No Forgeable items spawn in it.
Water in it can't be be collected.

Sounds pretty good, but harder to implement than bridges... Also IIRC there's gonna be less rivers in Haven 2 so ideas should probably go towards land transportation. Hb painhertz what is it, 73 now?

Forget canals, add oceans and give us Sloops, Schooners, Brigs, ect.
people will be able to transport goods across the vast deep blue and possibly even open up shipping companies as a new way of organised trade.

You could maybe have Servers, like in Salem, based in multiple different areas. Like Spain and France, and have the ability to transport and import materials, animals, and plants. Though it would require Jorbtar to do more research on different areas, I'm sure there are plenty of no-lifes willing to do that for them :P

I would have to agree with Saxony. I would rather see the addition of a sea environment and subsequent travel and flora/fauna.

I am for oceans as well...
BTW: trading this time around I believe is going to be very awesome.... also very dangerous.... Ah CWTH....

Do you mean in that they all join up?

I quite like it that they don't, it makes travelling around more tiresome in that you have to get out and carry your boat in places but it also creates nice little havens (lol) esp in early game, where you can be relatively cut off and given a chance to develop.

Saying that, I'm not opposed to oceans, just for the added builds, crafts and content but what I would like more than anything else when it comes to the water systems is an easier way to transport livestock other than one animal on a raft!

Even in real life they don't all connect up. A sensible network stems from something though. So ideally you'd have a river network connected to a snowmelt mountain or somesuch feature.

I believe oceans wouldn't be nearly as much fun as people are hoping they'd be though. Much like outer space, most of what you see on the ocean is a whole lot of nothing. Unless it's artificially crammed with things, it'll just be sailing in a direction for 30 minutes before you see land again.
