Quarries and Stone walls

Postby CG62 » Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:59 am

Because I CBA to necrobump the old one.

QUARRIES: Essentially mines, but can be built anywhere (with the same materials as a mine) and are used for extracting boulders.

STONE WALLS: Castle walls, essentially. I'll leave the recipe to the devs, but it should have cornerposts as Turrets (perhaps more than one type of cornerpost, for different turrets and towers?) that can be entered and used as either raised vantage points for archery or the same as a cabin would be used. This is, of course, optional.

The gate for the castle wall should be a gatehouse, essentially. From the inside of the gatehouse, you can pull a lever to lower the Metal-Grate-thing (Look, I haven't studied medieval fortifications in forever) over the main gate.

Stone walls should only be able to be built by a super-dedicated team of villagers, or a village with a massive amount of manual labourers.

The stone wall should be nearly impossible to destroy by hand, even with a large team. But to combat UBERCASTLES, there should also be some sort of siege technology to counter the wall. Large battering rams to break open the gate, Ladders to scale the walls, catapults and Trebuchets... The possibilities could be endless.

I'd personally be happy with just quarries, though. Perhaps with traces of metal ore every now and then.

Uh.. ladders to scale the wall? What the fuck else would you EVER need?
Is this ladder going to take hours and multiple people to put up?
Did you even fucking consider this for two seconds?

I was just listing siege equipment. Infact, I doubt catapults or Trebuchets would work that well towards the game either.

Soooo... battering rams only?

IMHO only way for sieges to work properly is if the siege engines need to be constructed on site, and take time to "mature", so that defenders have the time to notice them and sally out to destroy them. Attackers, on the other hand, would need to guard the construction site. Don't know how to balance the time, though - if it's short there's no time to see what's going on, and if it's long it's effin' boring and boils down who can waste more of his free time.

Valid concern, Potjeh.

Pulling off a siege mechanic in any game seems to be quite a difficult thing.

Perhaps incremental levels of siege equipment, ranging from a lowly battering-log carried by a team of 4-6 men, all the way up to a super-armored wheeled battering ram with a metal ornate head? Perhaps The highest could be something along the lines of a siege tower, which could be set alight with torches or flaming arrows but would almost guarantee a breach onto/over the enemy walls if used properly?

Then we'd need some sort of incremental defenses (in terms of siege-able defenses) as well.

lol did you ever consider pushing the ladder back over? Pulling it up and dropping it on your side? Shooting people off the ladder with arrows?

The only problem with that, Mon Ami, is that it would require guards to ALWAYS be placed on the walls of a fortress.
