Yes, I'd like it to be like that, I just couldn't figure out any good UI for it. :)

How about just allowing it to be closed for now? It wouldn't be an ideal solution, bit it would work nicely for now.

Make a row of small buttons (think buttons for showing claims) just above the chat area. Clicking them toggles village chat, area chat and whatever other chats you add. I keep trying to close area chat because I hate seeing messages from hours ago, and I kinda miss the background. Maybe have the buttons blink if there's new messages in those chats since it was last closed (messages from before the closing get purged).

By "good UI" I meant UI that doesn't take any effort to implement. ;)

By that logic the best UI would be none at all. Somehow that fails more general logic.
