Make rats have a purpose

Postby Zamp » Tue Jan 26, 2010 6:28 am

I see rats every so often and all I see them do is block my path, so why not give them a use? I was thinking that nearby rats could have a slight chance to get into a food or seed-containing container and slowly degrade the food/seed quality within that container until it is destroyed. This whoever could be easily combated with basic rat traps, preferably made from sticks that would be placed within containers. Another, more effective way, would be to tame a wild cat and have it patrol your village killing rats like a fox would kill rabbits or chickens, virtually eliminating the need for traps.

Whenever you get 2 rats in one container, they could exponentially breed. This though, is the fun part. You could take that container filled with rats and empty it inside an enemy village if you want to cause some damage to your enemy but don't have the combat skills for it. 100s of rats is no match for cats or mouse traps, sabotage is awesome. :D

What he said and also make them edible as newbie food, no feps or leather, just satisfy hunger. Do the same for frogs, the legs can be snaped off and used as some sort of food.

This can help with the starving in the woods as a newbie syndrome.

I don't think the op understands the concept of useful all that well..

no righteous man raises his hand against the innocent,
a man need only strike another to make him evil."

Well I did explain a use for them, or was that not good enough? Perhaps rat droppings could be used to cover thief scents based on the quality of the food it came from?

There is a difference between something being useful and having a use. Right now, they're just eyecandy and you can get stuck on them. He's really giving them a purpose in the game.

I think rats should only get into stuff that is damaged, if your going to go this route. so if someone lets a basket or chest get to much decay damage then the rats can get inside it.

Or, the rats would first eat away at the container until it is sufficiently damaged and would then nest in it. They do have a tendency to do that in real life.

I agree with both. On the technical side, rat presence would accelerate decay but they would only enter the container at say, 75% health.
