Teaching and learning

Postby VowOfSilence » Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:50 pm

Badly thought out ramblings about additional ways of character progression:

1) Learning by doing.
Farming skill improves by farming.
Some games do this, but i don't like it too much as the only way of progression because it encourages repetition. This is were other ways of learning kick in:

2) Learning by watching/coop. Requires Intelligence/Perception.
Farming skill improves by watching or working together with more experienced farmers.
Sounds like a nice social or afk activity. Crowds may follow high lvl warriors just to watch their battles. Maybe there will be organized show battles for others to watch?

3) Learning by having someone teach you. Teacher requiers Charisma/Psyche.
The fastest way to learn. Works similar to 2), but much more effecive.
Villages will need to organize their knowledge and how it's passed on. Experienced teachers will start selling their services in towns.

I kinda like that. It adds a whole new layer of social activities, trade, and organization.
It would also work well with rituals and wyrd - a ritual has the village elder teach the newcomers, and so on.

Any thoughts?

Don't know how I feel about AFK learning, but I really like the last option.

No RuneScaping please. Anything but this. Can't say the Wyrd system really appeals to me at all but I'd rather that than this.

Are you serious? You'd rather not go with the most logical and simple way to improve skills simply because it's similar to runescape?

Yes because the way the game works now is far better than what is suggested in the OP.

And, I'd like to hear why you think that is the most logical and simple way to do things.

How do you get better at anything in real life?
Not by doing completely unrelated tasks.

I have to say that I'm agreed with Hamburger. Unless you can point at this mechanic and say 'this is what makes Runescape bad', then it's not really a valid point.

The similarity to runescape isn't what's horrible. It's the horrible tedious modicum of development that arises as a result. Runescape is the example that is evidence of the absurdity of this suggestionj.

First off 'logical and simple' is just your really bad way of saying 'REALISM PL0X!'.

Secondly, consider smithing. Hands off this subject unless you've mined and smithed 1000 bars worth of any metal. THen consider for a moment how you would need to do that 10x over before you can actually produce something worth making.

Lastly, if you're still stubbornly obsessed with the absurd notion of realism then consider why the fuck on earth making several thousand plates or swords would give you any skill whatsoever in crafting jewelry.

I've done this half a dozen times in other threads. I'm not concerned enough to make the half a dozen other valid mechanics arguments I"ve already laid down or repeat them here for your convenience.

Agreed. A separate jewelling skill would be superior.
