Obsidian

Postby Chakravanti » Mon Feb 15, 2010 3:53 am

It seems absurd to me that bone arrows are better than stone arrows. I should *some* mountains should produce obsidian from digging rather than stone. I would think that obsidian should have quality of like gold and silver and the crafting of it is dependent upon stats and skills. Personally I would make it sqrt(dex*psy) but it's rather absurd how difficult psy is to attain that wouldn't exactly make it a replacement for lowbie tools so I don't think that's appropriate game mechanics. Perhaps someone might suggest a more practical if less realistic formula. Anyone who has psy has access to decent metals (to cook the bulbs) and i think metal should be better than obsidian.

It could also be used to craft cutting tools that are independent of tree Q. unfortunately this brings me back to Obsidian>Metal which seems just as absurd as bone>stone to me. I'm quite frustrated trying to think of a way to incorporate obsidian in a way that makes it better than bone but less than metal. Maybe someone can help me out here or something will dawn on me sooner or later. It just seems to me that obsidian should be part and parcel to the survival of this era.

I think it should be dex and int. You gotta have the intelligence to know where to strike the piece, and the dexterity to actually do it right.

Edit:
Obsidian can actually get very very sharp, its drawback comes from being extremely brittle.

Yes and perhaps I am wrong and maybe obsidian should prove to be a better cutting too at the cost of that every time it is used it loses quality until 'resharpened' by the craftsman. Int makes sense to me and is a less demanding stat than psy. Also a given tool should only have so many resharpenings and the quality loss should not be linear.

Thanks Pacho.

But obsidian IS stone. I've been assuming all along that stone arrows and axes were not made out of sandstone, but something which can take an edge.

Heck, we've got multiple types of trees in the game, so why can't we have multiple types of stone? Start off every noob with a couple of flints so they can light fires and go from there requiring sandstone for grinding wood, limestone for making querns, and flint, slate or obsidian for making blades, with a breakage factor like you hav on fishing poles where flint is the most durable and obsidian is the least.

But just for the sake of noobs have the basic stone axe stay the same... We need to have stone tools slightly better than the basic axe, but not as good as the decent metal ones. :)

Great idea, Chak!

i like the idea of multiple types of stone with multiple uses. i think it's better to just pretend everyone has flints though because i don't want to have to carry it around all the time.

Tinder box

Takes up one inventory square: contains birch bark, other bark, candle, flints, steel if you are so lucky, etc.. Quality of materials in your inventory or in your tinder box effect ability to light fires but only in the soon-to-be-implemented variable weather conditions such as rain, sleet and heavy winds, snow and hail.

Tinder box can be made out of wood or leather. Or shell.

Hey, how come we don't have any shells in this game??? Shells make the best scrapers for tanning hides, bar none

Mem to self: Do not get distracted writing replies to forum posts while character is cowering behind a tree hiding from a bear.
