Musical instruments

Postby Nobody » Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:39 am

In the LOTR and Ultima online there are several musical instruments, the relevant to the time period. Lutes, small drums, harps, flutes and the like. It would be nice to see and use something similar in H&H.

For clarity, I shall explain the mechanics.
To create it requires a skill similar to the "simple mechanics", but with a musical theme.
I think that must first be purchased "playing on the instrument" skill, which in turn will open skill for instruments craft.
This makes sense, since not every musician knows how to make instruments, Lol.
And of course, it must be very expensive (lp) skills.

So, now how to extract the sound.
1) When the instrument is in the hands (we're talking about the flute) through the action menu you can open the "playing window". It may seem like an instrument itself, which lies so that the "valves" were pointed to a flute player. Of course, as the fingering of flute is not limited by opening only one valve, so the option of clicking on the "hole" is not fit. I suggest to add a picture (lower pictures flute or above it, no difference) of string or something like that, divided by semitone, which can be clicked to produce sound. But this system is suitable only for those instruments that can not produce more than one sound at a time.
2) Consider for example the lute, which can produce more than one sound. I propose to make it four string, then you will understand why. Lute window looks like a flute window, but the handling is slightly different. It would be best to control by the keyboard, assigning each string its keys. I mean:
The first string - from "1" to "0"
The second - from the "Q" to "P"
Third - from "A" to ";"
Fourth - from "Z" to "?"
As a result, we obtain the four-stringed instrument with 10 frets, and you can play simultaneously on all strings. Of course, it is impossible to write in the chat, but even in real life is quite difficult to play and talk, Lol. It would be nice to add opportunity to "tune" instrument, ie to create your own configuration of lute.
3) Drums have their nuances, such as the sounds of the hit on the center and the edge of the drum differs, besides there is a myriad of percussion instruments, but this is going forward so far.

I understand that it will not bring benefit to the game, but personally I would be happy to sit on the porch of my house and play any tune while waiting until the cakes are baked. It can also add variety to the game. And if the problem with lags is solved , it will be possible to even try to play with someone.

I am sure that I am not the only one here who would like this addition. Well, now I'm waiting for critics, suggestions and the like. inb4 Jackard's yawn

Why do I get the impression you are maybe musical in rl?

This would be cool and a nice atmospheric touch. Only I think it would have to be on the long-range plans list, possible after the devs find a fix for the sound issues that so many people have where their choices in background noises are "Deafening" or "I gave up and turned my speakers off."

It's been suggested before, but my thoughts on it.
Less clicking. Just open up a guitar hero-esque window, after selecting known melodies. Something like Ocarina of Time, only the better you can play the melody, the better the quality of the effect.
More musical instruments getting together to play a song, could increase the effect if they all play the song, a Duet, Trio, Quartet, and so on.
And also offer a free-play menu, where you can play whatever song you feel like, granted there are enough pitches/octaves for it.
And on a side note, Mabinogi has a great system for this, as Jackard pointed out.

A little more than just a musician really, Lol.

Yes, this is a problem, I myself in the game only two sounds: the sound of an ax, slashing the tree, and when something falls into the water. It just breaks my sound system with incredible overdrive, although i have very good speakers and sound card.

devs have talked about wanting to do this, even going so far as suggesting a "lute hero" interface. would be cool of course but maybe not a high priority.

I'd like some kind of a musical notation system, so you could write music and play it automatically. Add an option to synch with other musicians, and it'll be much more doable then trying to play real-time in synch with other people. Plus, it lets you use chat while you're typing. Written music should be copyable, of course. If you have multiple shorter bits, you can mix and match to improvise music.

I do not think that we need it so complicated. Will be enough just to open the window and start playing something, then someone will sit next to and also will play in the same key and so on. Improvisation is always far more interesting than pre-written songs, but it will be important if the players are - not newcomers to the music. And for beginners - it is quite suitable.

You're a genius! Notes, right-click -> play -> and the player himself began to play what was previously written on a piece of paper.

This sounds like the sort of thing that might fit right in with Wyrd. Someone plays an instrument, and anyone withing listening distance (including the musician) fulfills a ritual.
